Tech sweeps Panthers in two matches to open season

LUBBOCK, Texas. – Only dropping one set on Saturday afternoon, the Texas Tech Red Raiders earned two 7-0 sweeps over the Eastern Illinois Panthers at the Lubbock Country Club to open the season.
In the first match of the doubleheader, the Red Raiders (2-0) won two doubles matches decisively against Eastern Illinois (0-2) to earn the doubles point and take an early lead. First, the duo of Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak defeated the Eastern Illinois duo of Zach White and Ludolph Wiggett, 6-2, at the top court. Then, Felipe Pagnacco and Thiago Guglieri paired up together for the first time and picked up a 6-2 victory against the Panther tandem of Tyler Carlin and Duarte Trocado at court two. Over on court three, the duo of Niksa Arsic and Ludovico Vaccari were ahead of EIU's William Hays and Gui Cauvilla, 5-3, when their match went unfinished.
Vaccari continued the winning streak for Texas Tech when he picked up his first career singles victory as a Red Raider, overtaking Carlin at court three in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Pawlak made his court one debut in singles, earning a win over White by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Clinching the match was freshman Guglieri, who collected his first career singles win when he defeated Trocado, 6-1, 6-3.
Playing out the matches, Arsic made it 5-0 in Tech's favor after beating Wiggett at the second court, 6-4, 6-3. Then, Brody Nejedly-Krall claimed his first dual singles victory over at court six by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Closing out the first match was Pagnacco at court five, as he recorded his first career dual singles win with a defeat of Cauvilla, 6-3, 6-2.
In the second match, the Red Raiders kept up the momentum in doubles after getting two more wins. The new pairing of Vaccari and Guglieri posted a win over EIU's White and Wiggett at court two, 6-2, before Abboud and Pawlak clinched the doubles point with a victory against Carlin and Trocado at the top court by a hard-fought, 7-5 score.
In singles, Pagnacco got things started with a straight set win over Trocado at court four. The Argentina native won the first set, 6-3, before posting a bagel in set two, 6-0, to claim the match. Putting the third point on the board for the Red Raiders was Arsic, who got his first career singles win at court one after beating White by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Clinching his second-consecutive match was freshman Guglieri as he won in two sets over Carlin, 7-6 (2), 6-0. Then, Vaccari added another win for Texas Tech when he overtook Wiggett in come-from-behind fashion, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. At court five, Nejedly-Krall picked up a victory against Cauvilla, 6-3, 6-3, before Abboud maintained the perfect sweep over the Panthers with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Hays.
Up next, the Red Raiders head to California to take on both UC Santa Barbara and Cal on January 24-25.
