Red Raiders on the road for two matches

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders head to the West Coast for a couple matches as they face the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Friday, January 24 at 3 p.m. CT, before taking on the California Golden Bears on Saturday, January 25 at 2 p.m. CT, both in Santa Barbara.
The Gauchos lead the all-time series over Tech with a 6-4 record as the two teams last played on May 3, 2019 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with UCSB winning it, 4-1. California leads the series against Tech, 3-1, with the two teams last facing off on May 10, 2014 in the NCAA Tournament as well.
Texas Tech (2-0) picked up a couple of 7-0 sweeps over the Eastern Illinois Panthers to open the season last Saturday. In dual doubles, the pairing of Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak lead the Red Raiders with a 2-0 record together. Individually in dual doubles, freshman Thiago Guglieri paired up with two different players and was able to win both of those matches as he boasts a 2-0 doubles record as well.
In dual singles, there are four Red Raiders who hold a perfect 2-0 record – Niksa Arsic, Guglieri, Felipe Pagnacco and Ludovico Vaccari. Pagnacco, Guglieri, Vaccari and Brody Nejedly-Krall all earned their first career dual singles wins during the season openers as Guglieri also leads the team with two match clinches.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are 2-0 to start the season with a 4-3 victory against Oklahoma State and a 6-1 win over Nevada. Three Gauchos opened the dual season with two singles wins over the Cowboys and Wolf Pack – Diogo Morais, Dominique Rolland and Charlie Underwood. The doubles pairing of Rolland and Gianluca Brunkow lead the team with a 2-0 dual record together. UCSB has five players ranked in the latest ITA singles rankings in Brunkow (21), Morais (65), Rolland (94), Conrad Brown (117) and Lucca Liu (122). In doubles, the tandem of Brunkow and Rolland check in at No. 37 nationally.
The California Golden Bears are heading into the weekend with a 2-0 record after getting two wins against Saint Mary's this past week. In their first match against the Gaels, Cal won it by a 6-1 score with their only loss coming at court two in singles in a three-set battle. The Golden Bears would sweep Saint Mary's 7-0 in the second match as they won all six singles matches and the doubles point. The Bears also have five ranked singles players in Carl Emil Overbeck (4), Theo Dean (32), Alex Chang (66), Derrick Chen (102) and Timofey Stepanov (110). Cal has two doubles teams ranked as the duo of Dean and Overbeck check in at No. 30 and the pair of Chang and Michael Wright check in at No. 84.
