Red Raider duo advances to finals at ITA Texas Regionals

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team delivered another strong weekend of play at the ITA Texas Regionals, highlighted by an impressive doubles run from Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri that ended in a finals appearance.

In singles, the Red Raiders earned several wins throughout the tournament, with advancements to the semifinals in the consolation draw. Freshman Thomas Van Den Dooren put together an impressive early run, advancing through two qualifying rounds to the main draw with victories over UT Arlington's Jesse Gothelf and Lamar's Maxwell Lindstedt, before earning a straight-set win over Baylor's Zsombor Velcz in the main draw Round of 64. Van Den Dooren would earn his first career ranked singles win over No. 59-ranked and 5-seeded Velcz by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Joining Van Den Dooren in qualifying was Guglieri, who advanced to the main draw with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lukas Hamacher of Lamar.

Arsic also notched some singles wins a hard-fought three-set victory over Baylor's Arman Zamani to reach the Round of 32, where he narrowly fell in a third-set tiebreak. Ludovico Vaccari opened his tournament with a convincing 6-3, 6-2, win against TCU's Kaj Quirijns, while Felipe Pagnacco and Guglieri added notable wins in the consolation draw. Guglieri earned back-to-back victories over UT Arlington's Finbar McGarvey and Texas A&M's Kriish Tyagi before withdrawing in the quarterfinals. Pagnacco made a run in the consolation draw, reaching the semifinals after totaling three wins.

The highlight of the weekend came in doubles, where Arsic and Guglieri built an impressive run to the championship match. After a first-round bye, the duo defeated Yazid Lahjomri and Finbar McGarvey (UT Arlington), 8-4. Then in the Round of 16, the Red Raiders earned a ranked win over the No. 75-ranked and 4-seeded team of Petro Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro of Rice, 8-6. In the quarterfinals, Arsic and Guglieri defeated 5-seeded Sebastian Eriksson and Sebastian Gorzny of Texas, 8-4, to keep advancing in the competition.

The Red Raider pair's semifinal win was in comeback fashion as they took down Matthieu Coignet and Mikel Garmendia of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8). Tech was down 3-6 in the third set tiebreak before rallying for the victory. The tandem becomes one of just seven Texas Tech doubles teams to reach the finals at Regionals since 2000, where they ultimately fell to Baylor's No. 28-ranked and 2-seeded team of Velcz and Connor Van Schalkwyk, 6-3, 7-6 (4), capping off the weekend with an outstanding performance.
