The Red Raiders saw a 20-match Big 12 road unbeaten streak and nine-match road Big 12 winning streak snapped Thursday
BOULDER, Colo. – Despite leading the shots 23-12 and dominating corners 9-1, No. 5/3 Texas Tech Soccer fell to No. 22/7 Colorado, 3-0 Thursday night at Prentup Field.
In what turned out to be Texas Tech's (12-2-2, 6-1-2 Big 12) first outright Big 12 road loss since Oct. 17, 2021, at No. 21 West Virginia, the Red Raiders allowed three goals in a league fixture for the first time since 2017 when Baylor downed Tech 3-0 on Oct. 6.
The loss snapped Tech's 20-match (15-0-5) road Big 12 winning streak and snapped the nine-straight outright wins on the road dating back to last year's 0-0 draw at TCU (Sept. 12). Tonight's setback is also just the second by a Red Raider squad in their last 30 matches.
After nearly striking first in the first 45 seconds of the match on a strong shot from Molly Skurcenski, Tech saw Colorado (12-2-3, 6-1-2 Big 12) score twice in a span of two minutes and 11 seconds.
The first goal was a well-placed shot from Ava Priest into the bottom-left side of the net, while the second strike was a deflected ball off a Red Raider for an own goal that was that credited to the nation's second-leading scorer Faith Leyba. Leyba also scored the third goal of the night in the 63rd-minute.
In the setback, Tech did force Colorado's Jordan Nytes to make 10 saves and did outshoot its opponent for the 17th time in 17 matches.
Based on the various results in the league on Thursday night, the Red Raiders fell from solo first place to a tie for third place with CU. The Buffs would have the tiebreaker with the Red Raiders if the two teams were to end up tied in the final standings.
TCU by virtue of its 1-0 win in Tucson vaulted into solo first place at 22 points. WVU sits in solo second place with 21 total points after its 1-0 win over Iowa State in Morgantown. The Red Raiders and Buffaloes sit on 20 apiece followed by Baylor who after stumbling tonight in Orlando to UCF (2-1) have 18 points.
HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"Tonight was not a game where the stats tell the story. Colorado has given up double the amount of shots in other victories. This is a really dangerous offensive team. What tonight came down to was: effort, attitude, fight and poor team defending. We didn't have a single defender cost us a goal tonight. Obviously, the own goal, their second goal, was brutal and it hurt. But those things happen. A bad bounce can go off your player and go in your own goal. Their second goal put us in a hole because we probably would have gone into the half down 1-0 and been ready to rumble in the second half. That hurt, and when we were pushing to make it 2-1 and turn the game on its head, their best player made the play that great players make. A hard and low shot into the corner and we didn't block the shot. And the result is what it is. Credit Colorado they were the better team tonight, but we're very disappointed in our overall fight and spirit. We've had that all season and it was missing tonight. When the biggest games have arrived, we've always shown up, and tonight wasn't an example of that. It's a game we're going to certainly regret because it hurts us in the Big 12 standings. Â It doesn't hurt us in the RPI and probably the rankings, but it hurts us in the standings. We have got to recover and regroup because we have a feisty K-State team coming in that has caused a lot of problems for people. So, it doesn't get any easier. If we don't fight more than we did tonight, then we can find ourselves in the same situation. This is a tough team, but we didn't show that tonight.
