Regional Knowledge
The regional championships help teams advance to the Division I cross country championships each year. The top two teams in each regional secure automatic bids to the championship. The first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team also secure an auto-bid to the championships.
If a team doesn't secure an automatic bid, it will have to rely on the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee to select it as one of the 13 at-large teams. Only two individual at-larges are selected, making a strong regional performance pivotal to advancing toward a national title.
Individual selections are a different story. From the regional, the first four finishers who do not belong to an automatic qualifier or an at-large team automatically advance to the championships. All four finishers have to finish in the top 25 within their region. Altogether, 36 individuals automatically qualify and two are chosen at-large, making 38 the grand total. The two at-large selections are the highest placing individuals at a regional that were not automatic qualifiers.
On The Lookout
Freshman Titus Kimaru has been on a tear this season. He was named a Big 12 Runner of the Week three times as he's placed inside the top-37 of each of his five races this year, collecting three wins. At Big 12s last week, he placed 11th overall, earning All-Conference honors.
On the women's side, look for Lily Mather to pace the squad. She holds a PB 6k time of 20:04.1 and finished 29th at Big 12s.
