Tech leaves Frisco undefeated after beating UNT

FRISCO, Texas – Bailey Maupin dropped 22 points and Snudda Collins added 10 as the Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a 67-47 win over the North Texas Mean Green on Thursday afternoon at the Comerica Center.
For Texas Tech (9-0), Maupin went 8-for-14 from the field (.571) and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc (.666) to lead the way in points and threes. Senior Gemma Núñez was all over the stat sheet as she scored six points and added six assists, a block and a season-best eight rebounds and five steals against North Texas (5-2).
Collins scored in double-figures once again, tallying 10 points and getting two assists and two steals in the game. Bristow was close to a double-double with eight points and seven rebounds, while picking up two blocks and assists. Jada Malone went 3-for-4 from the field and was 2-for-2 at the line for eight points. She also added four rebounds and two assists against the Mean Green.
Tech shot 45.1 percent from the field (23-for-51) and 39.1 percent from behind the arc (9-for-23). The Lady Raiders forced 27 North Texas turnovers while holding the Mean Green to 32.0 percent shooting from the field (16-for-50). Â
Tech got on the board first with back-to-back layups from Maupin. North Texas didn't score until the 6:04 mark with a jumper. Collins came in and nailed a three right before the media timeout, but the Mean Green responded with a jumper on the other end to cut their deficit in half. Maupin and Denae Fritz both connected with 3-pointers before North Texas scored a layup. With 1:44 left, Bristow got a layup, then Collins made a pullup jumper to lead 18-8 after one.
Both teams did not score for almost three minutes into the second quarter until Sarengbe Sanogo made two free throws. Bristow followed with a mid-range jumper for the 22-8 advantage. North Texas responded with a 6-1 run to make it 25-16, then Fritz hit a last second triple to extend the lead. Tech scored a couple of free throws, but then the Mean Green hit a three with one second left on the clock as Tech led 30-22 at the half.
North Texas kept its run going into the third quarter, scoring the first five points of the period. Maupin stopped their momentum with a couple of threes to make it 36-27. Núñez grabbed a steal and scored on a fastbreak layup, then Malone scored a second-chance layup for a 13-point lead. Sidney Love got a steal which led to a Malone layup, but North Texas answered with a three. Collins was able to get a three of her own right after, but then the Mean Green scored the next four points. Tech closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead by a 52-36 score.
North Texas scored on its first possession of the fourth quarter, then both teams would be held scoreless for almost two minutes after that. Núñez began a Texas Tech run with a three followed by another Maupin and-one play and a Bristow layup. The Mean Green got a free throw to stop the run right before the media timeout. At the 4:16 mark, Sanogo made a tough move to the basket to score a layup, but North Texas answered with a 5-0 run. Maupin made her career-high fourth three in response, then Malone added a couple of free throws as Tech would win it 67-47.
