Tech extends win streak, defeats ACU in Odessa

ODESSA, Texas – Senior Jada Malone was perfect from the field and led the team in points to aid the Texas Tech Lady Raiders to a 67-57 victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at the OC Sports Center.
For Texas Tech (12-0), Malone went a perfect 6-for-6 from the field for a team-high of 14 points against Abilene Christian (6-4), the second game in a row that a Lady Raider has been perfect from the field with at least six attempts. Malone also added a steal and three rebounds in the game. Also leading the team with 14 points was Bailey Maupin, who went 6-for-9 (.667) from the field and 2-for-5 from three (.400). Maupin recorded five boards, three assists and a steal as well.
Denae Fritz tallied her fourth double-digit game of the season with 10 points on 44.4 percent shooting from the field (4-for-9) and behind two 3-pointers. She led the way with three steals and also picked up two blocks. Snudda Collins recorded a career-high in assists with a team-leading seven, while Jalynn Bristow added a team-high nine rebounds and three blocks against the Wildcats.
Tech held ACU to just 29.8 percent shooting (14-for-47) and only allowed four Wildcat 3-pointers on 20 attempts (.200). The Lady Raiders picked up their second-consecutive game with over .500 shooting from the field, and fourth overall this season, as they shot 29-for-57 (.509) while connecting with six triples. In addition, Tech totaled 17 assists, 11 steals and seven blocks in the afternoon.
Tech began the game with an and-one layup by Sarengbe Sanogo, then Abilene Christian scored its first points three minutes into the quarter with a free throw. A three by Fritz made it 5-1, before Collins converted another Texas Tech and-one play for three more points. The Wildcats went on an 8-2 run to follow, getting within one with 2:56 left in the period. ACU would hit a 3-pointer with a few seconds left in the quarter to pull ahead, 16-15, after one.
Maupin hit a long two to start the second quarter, then Fritz followed with a three to make it 20-17. ACU scored four of the next six points on free throws before Maupin made a 3-pointer. Malone went on a 5-0 run herself to increase the lead. Maupin hit a jumper right after, getting fouled for an and-one opportunity heading into the media timeout. ACU scored a couple more free throws before Sidney Love and Malone made baskets. Adlee Blacklock scored on a driving layup, then Collins nailed a three as Tech took a 40-32 lead heading into halftime.
Abilene Christian forced a couple Tech turnovers and went on a 5-2 run to open the second half and force a Lady Raider timeout. ACU cut into the lead with a three, but Gemma Núñez answered back with one of her own. The Wildcats went on a 5-0 run until the Lady Raiders got a layup from Malone at 2:49. Tech regained momentum at the end of the quarter when Love grabbed a steal and made a fastbreak layup, then Nunez forced another turnover to end with another Love layup for a 55-46 advantage.
The Lady Raiders kept forcing turnovers as both Núñez and Fritz recorded steals to open the fourth quarter. Fritz was able to score on her takeaway before ACU scored its first field goal of the period at the 7:32 mark. Sanogo responded with a layup thanks to a Núñez dish to increase the lead to 11. The Wildcats connected with a triple to get within six points, but Malone was able to grab an offensive rebound and put it back up to extend the lead back to eight with 4:00 left. Tech closed out the game with tough defense and a 4-0 run to win it by a 67-57 score.
