LUBBOCK – No. 15 Texas Tech will head into Big 12 play on a three-game winning streak and with a 7-0 home record after rolling to an 87-57 win over Winthrop on Sunday at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders (10-3) extended a 46-game non-conference home winning streak after jumping out to a 7-0 run to start the game, having a 24-0 run to go up 35-4 and cruising the rest of the way for their third win this season with a 30-point margin or more.
Christian Anderson led Tech with 29 points, six rebounds and five assists while Jaylen Petty scored a career-high with 20 points on a 6-for-8 shooting in the game. JT Toppin recorded his seventh double-double of the season, providing 14 points and 11 rebounds and Donovan Atwell gave the Red Raiders four players in double figures by scoring 14 points with four 3-pointers. Atwell and Anderson both finished the game 4-for-9 on 3-pointers and the team went 10-for-26 from beyond the arc. "We probably played some of the best basketball we have all season in the first 20 minutes," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "We were competitive, shared the ball and made the right plays. We've got a lot to grow from but it was the most deflections and stops we've had in a game. Playing against a great offensive team like Winthrop and to separate like we did was tremendous. We're excited for conference play."
The Red Raiders open conference action by hosting Oklahoma State at noon on Saturday, January 3 at the USA. The Cowboys (11-1) host Bethune-Cookman on Monday night in Stillwater before making their way to Lubbock for the conference opener.
Anderson is now averaging 20.6 points and 7.1 assists after he also scored 27 points last Saturday against Duke. It was his sixth game this season scoring over 20 and came with him shooting 8-for-13 from the field and going 9-of-9 at the free-throw line. Petty, who had a previous career-high of 14 points against Northern Colorado, made his first career start in the game and was 6-of-7 at the free-throw line. The Red Raiders finished the game 23-for-26 as a team at the free-throw line. Toppin notched his second straight double-double and 38th of his career in the game where he led the team with five offensive rebounds.
Texas Tech took a 59-21 lead into halftime with Anderson at 25 points and three assists while Toppin already had 11 points and nine rebounds. The Red Raiders built out the 38-point lead going into the break with a 24-0 run that had it at 35-4. Atwell was 3-for-5 on 3-pointers and had nine points while Petty added eight points and three rebounds. Anderson was 4-for-7 on 3-pointers in the first half, including a pair to give Tech a 57-21 lead. His final shot of the half was a runner in the lane at the buzzer. The Red Raiders went into the break shooting 65.6% from the field, were 9-for-15 (60.0%) on 3-pointers and 8-for-12 at the free-throw line. Winthrop was only 6-for-28 (21.4%) from the field and 1-of-14 (7.1%) on 3-pointers through 20 minutes. The Red Raiders, who started the game on a 7-0 run, owned a 22-12 rebounding advantage. Â
