FORT WORTH – No. 19 Texas Tech jumped out to a 21-point halftime lead and cruised to an 82-58 win over LSU in the US LBM Coast-to-Coast Challenge on Sunday at Dickies Arena. Christian Anderson led the Red Raiders (7-2) with 27 points and 10 assists while JT Toppin and LeJuan Watts each recorded double-doubles in a game where the team knocked down 13 3-pointers and never trailed.
Tech, which now plays No. 25 Arkansas at 11 a.m. on Saturday at American Airlines Center in Dallas, held the previously unbeaten Tigers (8-1) to only 21-for-63 (33.3 percent) shooting from the field and 4-of-24 from beyond the arc. The Red Raiders owned the glass, finishing with a 48-33 rebounding advantage, including grabbing 13 offensive rebounds in the 24-point victory.
"We focused on celebrating everybody and being super focused defensively," Anderson said. "Just doing the stuff we work on and executing our game plan. Never taking a play off or trying to slip on one possession. Being precise on everything and I think it showed today."
Texas Tech has now won four straight matchups over LSU and owns a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series.
"It started with our ability to get back in transition," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "We didn't let them get transition baskets. I thought our transition defense was what it needed to be and then they had to play half court. Our energy to do that throughout the game was tremendous."
Toppin recorded his fourth double-double of the season and 35th of his career with 15 rebounds and 11 points while Watts had his first double-double as a Red Raider with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Watts now has 11 double-doubles in his career and led the Red Raiders with five offensive rebounds in the game. He finished the game with one 3-pointer and was also 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Toppin also added three blocked shots and had three offensive rebounds.
Anderson had 20 of his 27 points in the first half and finished the game 5-of-9 on 3-pointers while also adding five rebounds and two steals to his stat line. It was Anderson's seventh career game scoring over 20 points and seven points from his career-high of 34 which came in the season opener against Lindenwood. The double-double was his second of his career following him adding 11 assists to his career-high 34 points in the win over Lindenwood. Jaylen Petty added 11 points after going 3-for-4 on 3s and Donovan Atwell finished with nine points on three 3-pointers. Atwell now has 997 career points going into the matchup against the Razorbacks in Dallas. Luke Bamgboye contributed six points and three rebounds and Tyeree Bryan had three points and three rebounds in the win from the starting lineup.
While LSU struggled shooting through the game, Tech stayed hot throughout – finishing at 28-for-60 (46.7 percent) overall, 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) on 3-pointers and making 13 free throws. The team had 10 second-chance points and six steals.
Texas Tech dominated the first half and led at the break by a 47-26 margin after making nine 3-pointers and limiting the Tigers to only 25.7 percent shooting overall and 2-for-13 on 3-pointers. Anderson led the Red Raiders with 20 points after going 4-of-5 on 3-pointers and 7-for-11 overall from the field. It was his second game this season scoring 20 or more points by halftime with a season-best 25 points in the season-opener against Lindenwood at halftime. Toppin went into the break with eight rebounds and six points while Petty had eight points and Atwell six. Atwell and Petty both hit two 3-pointers in the first half for the Red Raiders who were 9-for-15 (60 percent) from beyond the arc at the break. The Red Raiders jumped out fast by hitting four of their first five 3-pointers in the game. Atwell hit a pair, his first for an 8-1 lead and then another to take a 13-4 advantage. Watts hit the fourth to take an 18-9 lead before Anderson made a pair of layups to get into double figures and give Tech a 23-11 lead eight minutes into the game. The Red Raiders would take a 15-point lead with Petty hitting his first 3-pointer of the game and second to take a 31-13 lead. Anderson continued the hot 3-point shooting, making his third and taking the lead to 36-16.
The second half proved to follow the same script with LSU getting to within 17 before an Atwell 3-pointer gave the Red Raiders a 65-44. Anderson's fourth 3-pointer of the game pushed it to 70-46 before he hit a pair of free throws to give him 27 points and Tech a 26-point lead. Toppin reached his double-double quota with a hook shot that gave him 11 points to go along with 13 rebounds – with Tech leading 74-46 with 7:44 to play.
