
Tech on the road to play UTSA and Rice

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders are on the road for back-to-back matches this week. First, the Red Raiders face the UTSA Roadrunners on Friday, February 14 at 1 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio, before heading to Houston for a contest against the Rice Owls on Sunday, February 16 at 11 a.m. at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Tech leads the all-time series with the Roadrunners with an 18-1 overall record. The two teams last played on February 11, 2024 as Tech won it by a 4-1 score in Lubbock. The Owls lead the Red Raiders in the all-time series, 21-16, with Tech last winning against Rice on March 19, 2021, 4-0, in Houston.
The Red Raiders (4-3) are coming off a gritty, 4-3 victory at Wichita State last weekend. In the match, Tech won the much-needed doubles point after Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak as well as Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri claimed their matches at courts one and three, respectively, for an early 1-0 advantage. In singles, Tech got wins from Abboud at court six, Ludovico Vaccari at court four and Pawlak at court one to clinch the victory over the Shockers.
In dual singles, three Red Raiders lead the way with four wins apiece in Arsic, Guglieri and Vaccari. In dual doubles, the pairing of Abboud and Pawlak lead the team with a 6-1 record, all at court one.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The UTSA Roadrunners are 3-2 heading into the match on Friday, with wins against UTRGV (4-0), UT Arlington (4-3) and Denver (6-1). Their two losses were against Texas A&M (1-6) and Oregon (0-4). The Roadrunners are led in doubles by the duo of Miguel Alonso and Tiago Torres, who rank No. 53 in the latest ITA Rankings.
Rice is 4-3 on the season so far and is set to play Lamar on Friday before facing the Red Raiders. Some of their wins have come against LSU (4-3), UTRGV (7-0) and Prairie View A&M (7-0). Their three losses were against No. 1 Texas (0-4), Arkansas (2-4) and Baylor (1-6). The Owls have a ranked doubles team in Kabeer Kapasi and Arthus De La Bassetiere, who check in at No. 50 and hold a 3-3 record at court one. In dual singles, Rice is led by Petro Kuzmenok with three wins, most coming at court two.
