The Red Raiders take game one 4-1 over the Bears in Waco
WACO, Texas – Hailey Toney's offense and NiJaree Canady's pitching were big catalysts for the No. 12/14 Red Raiders (21-7, 3-1) 4-1 win over Baylor (12-15, 1-3) on Friday night at Getterman Stadium. Toney went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI while Canady threw a complete 7.0 inning game striking out seven and allowing just one run, which was unearned.
Victoria Valdez drove in the first run of the game in the second inning with a single into left field which brough Alana Johnson in from third. Johnson would score two innings late but by her own admission, launching a solo home run in the fourth inning to make it a 2-0 ball game.
Toney would then bring in the final two Red Raider runs with a single in the fifth and a double in the seventh.
The Bears got an unearned run across in their half of the fifth but weren't able to get much else going thanks to some timely defensive plays and big strikeouts including a great throw from Katie Lott in left field to eliminate a run in the second.
Mihyia Davis was the other Red Raider to have a multi-hit game as her and Toney combined to go 6-for-8 at the top of the order.
Lauren Allred, Alexa Langeliers, Bailey Lindemuth and Raegan Jennings also got hits as Tech finished with 12 on the night.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will play Baylor again at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Getterman Stadium.
