
Toppin earns AP All-America honors

LUBBOCK – JT Toppin is an Associated Press All-America.
Averaging 18.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and with 15 double-doubles for Texas Tech this season, Toppin was named to the AP All-America Second Team on Tuesday ahead of the NCAA Tournament where the Red Raiders open against UNC Wilmington at 9:10 p.m. on Thursday in Wichita, Kansas. The all-America honor is Toppin's second with him previously being named to The Sporting News All-America Second Team. The USBWA and NABC will announce their all-America teams on Wednesday.
The AP All-America First Team includes Cooper Flagg (Duke), Johni Broome (Auburn), Braden Smith (Purdue), Mark Sears (Alabama) and Walter Clayton (Florida). Toppin is joined on the AP All-America Second Team by Kam Jones (Marquette), John Tonje (Wisconsin), PJ Haggerty (Memphis) and RJ Luis (St. John's). The AP All-America Third Team consists of Ryan Kalkbrenner (Creighton), Zakai Zeigler (Tennessee), Eric Dixon (Villanova), LJ Cryer (Houston) and Hunter Dickinson (Kansas).
He is the fifth AP All-America in Texas Tech's program history, following Jason Sasser (1996), Andre Emmett (2004), Keenan Evans (2018) and Jarrett Culver (2019).
Toppin, who is in his first season at Tech after transferring from New Mexico, has been selected for a slew of postseason honors, previously being named Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, All-Big 12 First Team, All-Big 12 Newcomer Team and The Sporting News All-America Second Team. He also earned Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team and NABC All-District. A sophomore from Dallas, Toppin leads the Red Raiders with his 18.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 15 double-doubles this season. He scored a season-high 41 points in the double-overtime win over Arizona State and had a season-high 18 rebounds against Saint Joseph's. He has scored 20 or more points in 14 games this season, including three games with 30 or more.
