Lady Raiders host Boston U for NCAA First Round

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 12-ranked Texas Tech Lady Raiders were selected to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. As the 1-seed in the Lubbock Regional, Tech will welcome 2-seeded Stanford, 3-seeded FIU and 4-seeded Boston University to West Texas this weekend at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Lady Raiders will take on Boston University in the first round on Friday at 1 p.m. Stanford and FIU will play at 10 a.m. on Friday as well. The winners of those two matches will face in the second round on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Texas Tech is 22-2 overall and went 12-1 in Big 12, earning a share of the regular-season title. The team would go on to win the Big 12 Tournament title the following week for the second time in program history and first time since 2017. Texas Tech hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament five other times – in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Texas Tech and Boston University are meeting for the second time in program history. The last time the two teams met was also in the NCAA First Round in Lubbock on May 13, 2016, as the Lady Raiders won, 4-0. FIU leads the all-time series against Tech, 2-1. However, the Lady Raiders won the last meeting by a 4-0 score on February 10, 2019. Both Texas Tech and Stanford have never played one another before.
The Lady Raiders are led in singles wins by Yekaterina Dmitrichenko with 19 dual wins and a 10-0 record at court two. Dmitrichenko is on a 10-match win streak and was named All-Big 12 First Team Singles. Also getting Big 12 singles recognition was Avelina Sayfetdinova, who made the Second Team. Jermine Sherif remains undefeated in the dual season with a 13-0 record, 12 of those coming at court six.
In dual doubles, No. 8-ranked Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola lead the way with a 17-3 dual record, earning All-Big 12 First Team Doubles. In addition, the duo of Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy were named to the Second Team after a 13-2 year at line two. The pairing of Sherif and Andreea Lila also have 13 wins, all coming at court three. Head coach Adam Herendeen was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the first time of his career, announced by the league off on Wednesday.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Boston University is 13-8 overall and went 6-1 in the Patriot League. Currently on a three-match win streak, the Terriers won their conference tournament to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Some key wins for the Terriers this year have come against Army West Point, Navy, UMass and Boston College. The Terriers are led in dual singles wins by two players with nine apiece – Madison Liu and Emily Zhao. In dual doubles, the duo of Uma Bakaityte and Gabriella Mikaul lead the way with a 10-7 record at the top of the lineup.
Nol 25-ranked Stanford is 15-8 overall and 7-5 in ACC play. The Cardinal most recently got an ACC First Round tournament win over Miami before falling to No. 8 North Carolina in the quarterfinals. Stanford also has key wins over Wake Forest, Florida State, SMU, UCSB and Memphis. They've lost close matches to NC State, Duke, Virginia and California. The Cardinal are led in dual singles wins by No. 8-ranked Valerie Glozman with 16, followed by No. 12 Connie Ma with 14 and Caroline Driscoll with 13. In dual doubles, the tandem of No. 27 Ma and Glozman lead the team with 14 wins, all at court one.
FIU is 15-4 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA. The Panthers are on a three-match winning streak after defeating Louisiana Tech, Liberty and New Mexico State for the CUSA Tournament title. Other key wins this season have come against South Florida, Boston University, Middle Tennessee, Miami and North Texas. The Panthers are led in dual singles by three players with 13 wins – No. 99 Oyinlomo Quadre, No. 97 Ekaterina Khayrutdinova and Valery Gynina. In dual doubles, the pairing of Gynina and Khayrutdinova total and team-best eight wins, with the majority of those coming at court two.
