Tech defeats Albany in first home match of the season
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (7-3) took down UAlbany (5-5) in its first home match of the season thanks to career performances from a cast of Red Raiders. Tech won 3-1 and was led by Addie Kanouff and Kalli Jioshvili Ravva who both notched career-highs in kills, recording 16 and 14, respectively.
Katelyn Cochran also made some personal history, recording a career-high 52 assists while also recording nine digs. Shelby Ignash set a season-high with eight kills and tacked on two blocks as she made the third start of her young career.
Sierra Grizzle finished the match with 24 digs, to eclipse 1,000 on her career and was a perfect 8-for-8 on serve receive. Ashlyn Bellamy was a big contributor for the Red Raiders as well, going for 12 kills and nine digs while recording three aces. Reagan Engler and Aliyah McDonald rounded out the rest of Tech's scorers as Engler finished with seven kills and McDonald with four.
The Red Raiders also recorded 62 kills and 58 assists as a team, both of which are season highs for the team.
How it Happened:
The Red Raiders and Great Dane's battled throughout the match. There were 31 total ties and 14 lead changes throughout the four sets, most of which happened in the first and third sets.
Tech was able to get a 25-23 win in set one. A kill from Bellamy gave Tech a 15-11 lead going into the media timeout before UAlbany was able to storm back and take an 18-17 lead which forced a Tech timeout. The Red Raiders tied it back up at 20-20 and were able to grab five of the final eight points.
UAlbany answered back with a dominating second-set victory. They jumped out to a 12-7 lead to force a Red Raider timeout and kept their foot on the gas as they went up 21-15 before the next stoppage. Tech made a bit of a run leading up to that break, but the Great Dane's had pushed the lead too far and finished with a 25-17 win.
The Red Raiders bounced back for a hard-fought 25-21 win in the third set thanks to five kills from Kanouff who hit .500 for the set and added two blocks. Jioshvili Ravva and Bellamy added three kills each to back up Kanouff.
After holding just a 15-14 lead in the fourth set, Tech was able to go on a 10-5 run to close out the match and improve to 7-3 on the season.
UP NEXT: Tech will host Ole Miss tonight at 7 p.m.
