Jioshvili Ravva continues to shine at home
LUBBOCK, Texas – Tech fell 3-1 to Ole Miss in the Red Raiders second match of the Red Raider Classic. In a night where the Red Raiders (7-4) were without their leading scorer Reagan Engler, Tech battled in a closely contested match against Ole Miss (7-3) thanks to a breakout performance by freshman Kalli Jioshvili Ravva. The France native became the first Red Raider to eclipse 20 kills in a match this season. A fellow freshman, Kenna McKenzie, also had a nice night, recording 10 kills while hitting a solid .304.
Jioshvili Ravva finished the match with a career-high 22 kills while recording her first double-double as she notched a career-high 10 digs. McKenzie's 10 kills were good for second-best on the team as Addie Kanouff followed with closely with seven kills while Aliyah McDonald led the team hitting .556 with five kills and also finishing with a team-high four blocks.
Tatum Johnson and Ashlyn Bellamy combined for the final six kills to round out the major scorers for Tech. Bellamy also finished second on the team in digs with 10. Peyton Dunn posted 41 assists and eight digs as she commanded the Red Raider offense. Sierra Grizzle led the team with 19 digs and added eight assists and an ace.
How it Happened:
Ole Miss took a sizable lead early that the Red Raiders were able to chip away at. Jioshvili Ravva was a huge lift for Tech, recording seven kills while hitting over .450 in the set. The Rebel's Gabi Placide had a strong set of her own finishing with six kills while also hitting over. 500 she pushed Ole Miss past the Red Raiders for the 25-19 set one win.
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 4-1 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Kanouff on the right side but Ole Miss answered back and eventually took a 14-10 lead following a Tech timeout. The Red Raiders answered right back though with a 5-1 run to tie the set. The set was tied at 20-20 before Tech was able to score five of the final eight points, despite the Rebels making it close, to even the match.
After the Rebels took an early 3-0 lead, Tech came right back with a 5-0 run off the service run of Grizzle. Ole Miss, however, had a big 7-0 run later in the match to take a commanding 17-7 lead. Tech would grab a few points back, but the Rebels had the set under control as they took a 25-17 win.
It was back-and-forth early before Ole Miss took a 14-10 lead to force a Red Raider timeout. Out of the break, Jioshvili Ravva got three of the next four Red Raider points to tighten the set. The Rebels were able to answer every run with one of their own as Tech took their last timeout down 20-15 as they looked to rally late. And rally they did, cutting the Rebels lead down to just two before Ole Miss went on a 3-0 run to close out the match.
UP NEXT: Tech will face Incarnate Word tomorrow at 12 p.m. to finish out the Red Raider Classic.
