Ashlyn Bellamy has career day with 23 kills and 20 digs
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raiders pulled the reverse sweep off against Incarnate Word to close out the Red Raider Classic on Saturday afternoon. Tech (8-4) was led by Ashlyn Bellamy who had a career-high 23 kills and Kalli Jioshvili Ravva who had 18 kills as they made life difficult for the Cardinals (4-8) defense.
Addie Kanouff recorded double-digit kills as well with 13 as Taylor Bahnub finished with seven kills. Aliyah McDonald, Tatum Johnson and Kenna McKenzie combined for the final eight Red Raider kills as Sierra Grizzle also notched a kill from the libero position.
Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran split time at setter with Dunn recording 26 assists and eight digs while Cochran had 27 assists and five digs. Grizzle, Bellamy and Jioshvili Ravva recorded 20 digs each as both Bellamy and Jioshvili Ravva recorded double-doubles.
Bellamy becomes the first Red Raider this season to record 20+ kills and 20+ digs in a match.
Johnson led the team with four blocks as she finished with five points.
How it Happened:
The Cardinals jumped all over Tech in the opening set, taking an early 8-3 lead. The Red Raiders called a timeout and were able to chip at Incarnate Word's lead a little, but the Cardinals answered every run with one of their own as they hit over .500 for a majority of the set on their way to a 25-14 win.
Incarnate Word carried that momentum into the second set as they again jumped out to an early lead and would not relinquish it, going up 2-0 with a 25-17 set win.
Tech flipped the script to open the third set, taking a 10-4 lead thanks to a 4-0 that forced a Cardinal timeout. They held onto that lead and then some as they forced a fourth set with a 25-12 win.
The Red Raiders pushed their big lead into the fourth set before the Cardinals put some pressure on Tech. Incarnate Word got within two, but the Red Raiders were able to close it out as they won 25-21 to push a fifth set.
Tech controlled the beginning of the fifth set as they were the first team to eight, but the Cardinals rallied back after a timeout and tied it at 13-13 before a Bahnub kill forced match point for the Red Raiders as they went on to complete the reverse sweep.
UP NEXT: Tech will be back at home to open up Big 12 play against Baylor on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
