Red Raiders fall to No. 20 Bears in Big 12 opener

Kalli Jioshvili Ravva continues to shine with a 19-kill performance
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (8-5, 0-1) fell to No. 20 Baylor (7-3, 2-0) 3-1 on Wednesday in the Red Raiders Big 12 opener. The Red Raiders Kalli Jioshvili Ravva continued her strong play, going for a match-high 19 kills while hitting .240 and posting four blocks and seven digs. The freshman from France has now recorded 73 kills in her last four matches and is quickly becoming a familiar face for Red Raider fans.
Along with Jioshvili Ravva, Addie Kanouff and Ashlyn Bellamy had solid outings, going for nine and seven kills, respectively. Kanouff hit .368 while Bellamy recorded four digs and a pair of blocks. Sierra Grizzle led the team with another 20-dig performance as Katelyn Cochran and Peyton Dunn combined to dish out 40 assists led by Dunn's 23.
Aliyah McDonald and Shelby Ignash combined for seven kills out of the middle-block position while Taylor Bahnub and Kenna McKenzie both notched two kills. Jasmine Martin played in the fourth set and made an impact with a kill, block and a pair of digs.
How it Happened:
The Bears asserted their dominance in the first set, after the Red Raiders got an early 4-2 lead. Baylor went up 19-14 late before finishing out the set with a 25-17 win.
Baylor looked to be cruising to a second set win as they went up 6-0 and forced an early Texas Tech timeout, but the Red Raiders chipped away to tie it at 15-15 thanks to swings from Kanouff and Jioshvili Ravva while Grizzle made some tough plays in the back row to keep the ball up. The set went to a win-by-two scenario after Baylor tied the set at 25-25. A few set-point service errors kept the Bears alive, but Tech got the final two points to tie the match 1-1.
Baylor again jumped out to an early lead, going up 6-1, however the Red Raiders would not rally back from that as they the Bears went on to take the lead 25-15.
Tech battled in a fourth set that saw three lead changes and six ties, but after the Bears took a 12-11 lead, they went on an 11-2 run to close out the match and improve to 2-0 in Big 12 play.
UP NEXT: Tech will travel to Houston to take on the Cougars at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
