Tech falls to Houston 3-1
HOUSTON, Texas – The Red Raiders (8-6, 0-2) and Houston (8-5, 1-1) faced off the second Big 12 match of the season for both teams on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars took the match 3-1 despite Tech's best effort to force a fifth set in a highly competitive fourth set of play.
Addie Kanouff finished the match with a match-high 11 kills while hitting .348. Aliyah McDonald and Taylor Bahnub were efficient as they both hit .500 and combined for 13 kills to just one error combined error.
Reagan Engler got six kills in her first action back from a brief injury as Kalli Jioshvili Ravva finished with five kills to round out the top scorers for Tech.
Peyton Dunn and Katelyn Cochran combined for 29 assists with Dunn leading the charge with 18 as she added four digs. Sierra Grizzle had another 20-dig performance, posting a match-high 21 from the libero position. Grizzle also added two aces.
Shelby Ignash and Bahnub had five blocks a piece as they held down the right side of the net for most of the third and fourth sets.
How it Happened:
Set one was a close affair, but serving errors plagued the Red Raiders as Houston won 25-21 but Tech's seven service errors were the big difference in an otherwise strong set. Kanouff and Jioshvili Ravva combined for seven of Tech's 12 kills, outperforming the Cougars in that category.
Houston hit .381 in set two while holding to a -.250 hitting percentage as the Cougars took a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 win.
The Red Raiders flipped the script in the third set, hitting over .250 while holding the Cougars to a hitting percentage of .029 thanks to four blocks, mainly from Ignash and Bahnub on the right side. Tech lengthened the match with a 25-16 win.
The Cougars came out hot in the fourth set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead thanks to two aces and two blocks. Tech quickly rallied back and tied the set at 14-14 before Houston regained a slim lead of 15-14 going into the media timeout. The Red Raiders took a late lead at 18-17 and were able to control that lead for a little bit thanks to nine service errors by the Cougars. However, Houston figured it out from behind the service line as they rallied back to win 29-27 in a thrilling fourth set to take the match 3-1.
UP NEXT: Red Raiders will head to Ames to take on Iowa State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
