First half flurry pushes Tech past Iowa State

The Red Raiders got two goals in the first 20 minutes to win their seventh-straight Big 12 road match
AMES, Iowa – Sam Courtwright and Kylie Bahr combined for a goal just 20 seconds in, while Peyton Parsons header in the 17th minute provided the capper, in Texas Tech Soccer's 2-0 win at Iowa State.
After a disappointing performance in a 1-1 draw against Houston on Thursday, Texas Tech  (8-1-1, 2-0-1 Big 12) rebounded Sunday, securing its seventh-straight Big 12 road match win extending its road conference unbeaten streak to 18 games (13-0-5).
With the victory, the Red Raiders also secured their eighth-straight victory over Iowa State (4-3-2, 1-2-0 Big 12) in the overall series and now have won 17 of the last 19 matchups against the Cyclones (17-1-1).
In the win, goalkeeper Faith Nguyen made a pair of saves to record her sixth-straight road clean sheet. Through her first eight Big 12 road matches of her Texas Tech career, Nguyen has allowed just one a goal, in last year's 2-1 win at Kansas State (Sept. 26).
The clean sheet was her 15th career shutout as a Red Raider.
After Iowa State took the opening touch, the Red Raiders forced a turnover and Parsons played Bahr down the left flank. The speedy outside back hooked a beautiful cross into the box that Courtwright was able to bury for her third goal of the season at the 21 second mark of the season.
It was the second fastest goal of the season, as Parsons scored 19 seconds into the Red Raiders 2-1 win over Santa Clara.
Armed with the 1-0 lead, the Red Raiders kept pushing for the ever-important second goal.
Ultimately the goal came when midfielder Kate Liebel hit a streaking Macy Blackburn down the right flank.
As she's done time-and-time again, Blackburn hooked a perfect ball deep into the Cyclones 18-yard box that Parsons was able to head home. The assist was Blackburns 42nd career assist and 56th career point moving past Texas Tech Hall of Famer Taylor Lytle for ninth all-time on the Red Raider point list. Blackburn closed the week with a goal and assist.
The goals by Courtwright and Parsons proved to be enough on Sunday afternoon for the Red Raiders to close out the fifth win in their last six matches and to improve to 41-0-1 when scoring twice.
In the end, the Red Raiders outshot ISU 22-9 on Sunday afternoon and took six corners as opposed to the Cyclones one. The 22-9 advantage extends the Red Raiders streak of outshooting their opponent.
HEAD COACH TOM STONE:
"We played a really good opponent on Thursday in Houston, and they caused us some issues. We felt like we got a little out of character and a little off script. For us to be successful we need to stay on script. There are a lot of creative opportunities in soccer, and the players know they have areas on the field and places where they can do whatever they want. But we really did get off our general way of playing and did things we don't normally do on Thursday. So, we talked a lot about getting back to who we are and playing like the Texas Tech team that we've been since the preseason. One of the things we did well in the first few games of the season is we got off to a good start. We were ferocious in the first five minutes. You saw that in the exhibition contest at Denver, our opening game at San Diego State and at Santa Clara. We were awesome coming out and today we did the same thing, scoring in 20 seconds. You can't always guarantee that but if that's your attitude and mentality, you will have the upper hand for the first quarter of the game, which we did. Â The goal was quite a relief because Iowa State was content to sit back a bit and make it crowded. So when you score that early they have to come out a bit which gave us more opportunities."
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders return to Lubbock for the start of a three-game homestand on Thursday night when the Oklahoma State Cowgirls pay a visit Thursday night to the John Walker Soccer Complex. First touch is set for 7 p.m.Â
