WACO, Texas – No. 12 Texas Tech set a new Big 12 record by making 14 3-pointers in the first half and finished by matching a program record of 17 in a 92-73 win over Baylor on Tuesday at Foster Pavilion. Christian Anderson led the Red Raiders (15-4, 5-1 Big 12) with 26 points after making a career-high eight 3-pointers, going 8-for-10, while Donovan Atwell went 7-for-10 from beyond the arc and finished with 21 points. The Red Raiders never trailed in the game, led by 19 at halftime and were up by as many as 30 to extend a four-game winning streak and move to 2-1 on the road in conference play. Anderson's eight 3-pointers matched the second most by a Red Raider in a game and was just one behind Stan Bonewitz who made nine against Kansas on March 4, 2009. JT Toppin scored 13 of his 22 points in the second half when the Bears (11-7, 1-5 Big 12) shifted their defensive strategy which saw him take over and the Red Raiders shoot 3-for-8 on 3-pointers in the second half. LeJuan Watts finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and led Tech with three steals in a game where he reached the 1,000-point milestone. Watts, who entered the game with 996 career points, finished 4-for-6 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. Tyeree Byran added seven points with one 3-pointer as a reserve while Jaylen Petty made one 3 and finished with three points and three assists. Â
Tech's win extended its winning streak over Baylor to four games and increased the all-time advantage in the series to 86-65. The Red Raiders also had 17 3-pointers in wins over Lindenwood and Oklahoma State and matched the record when Anderson hit his eighth of the game to put the team up 85-57 with 5:33 remaining. Anderson had a previous career-high of six 3-pointers in two previous games this season and is now shooting 68-for-150 (45.3%) on 3-pointers for the season while averaging 20.2 points per game. Atwell, who hit a season-high seven 3-pointers, was one off his career high. He is now 65-for-151 (43.0%) from beyond the arc and is averaging 11.9 points per game. Toppin had a streak of seven straight double-doubles end after having only four rebounds and is averaging 21.6 points and 10.8 rebounds this season. He now has 10 games this season with 20-plus points and 30 in his career while Anderson has nine games scoring over 20 this season and Atwell recorded his second. Anderson's eight 3-pointers were the most by a Red Raider since Kerwin Walton also had eight last season against UNC Wilmington in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
The overall Big 12 record for 3-pointers in a game is 20 by Missouri in 2002. Tech has now made 10 or more 3-pointers in 14 of 19 games this season and leads the Big 12 with 11.4 made 3-pointers per game and is shooting 39.1% as a team from beyond the arc.
Tech took a 55-36 lead into halftime after going 14-for-19 (73.7%) on 3-pointers with Atwell making seven and Anderson knocking down six.
