February 18, 2026 | Men's Basketball
TEMPE, Arizona – No. 13 Texas Tech was upset with a 72-67 loss at Arizona State on Tuesday at Desert Financial Arena.
A two-game homestand awaits Texas Tech(19-7, 9-4 Big 12) back in Lubbock where it will host Kansas State at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and then Cincinnati at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24 at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders are currently 12-1 at home this season and 42-6 on their home court under Grant McCasland. The Sun Devils (14-12, 5-8 Big 12) improved to 8-5 on their home court while Tech is now 4-3 on the road in conference play.
"To their credit, I thought the way they hung in there with each other over the course of the game really said a lot about their team," McCasland said. "The biggest stat for me was just our inability to take care of the ball which led to some transition baskets. We had some moments where we got divided, and we just didn't have the competitiveness that it took to win on the road, so it's disappointing. I've got to do better to help our team in these road environments. We've always been a good road team and we fought and obviously had some success, but this wasn't good enough."Â
JT Toppin led the Red Raiders with 20 points and eight rebounds before suffering an injury with six minutes remaining and did not return. He finished the game with four blocks, two steals and was 8-for-18 from the field. Christian Anderson added 18 points, six assists and six rebounds while Donovan Atwell was 4-for-8 on 3-pointers and had 12 points. Luke Bamgboye finished the game with six rebounds and a blocked shot. Atwell's fourth 3 of the game give him 94 for the season, matching Tech's single-season record that Cory Carr has owned since the 1996-97 season. Anderson finished the game 4-for-7 on 3-pointers along with going 2-of-2 at the free-throw line. Â
Arizona State led 37-36 at halftime and would lead by 11 before Anderson hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game with 3:10 remaining. Jaylen Petty followed with a 3-pointer of his own, trimming the deficit to 69-62 and it was a 69-67 game when Anderson came up with a steal and fastbreak layup with 27.3 seconds left. Down three after an ASU free throw, Tech had an opportunity to tie the game but committed a turnover to give the Sun Devils the ball back and Maurice Odum made two free throws to seal the upset. Â
"This team has always responded," McCasland said. "We've been in this league long enough to know that you're not going to be defined by one game, even though I think this was a huge one and I don't want to understate that. I understand what was at stake. We're playing to put ourselves in position and we've got to respond and turn around and go back home and get ready to win on Saturday. That's what this is about. That's what this league's always been about. As disappointing as losses are, specifically this one right now, it's on to figuring out how you can improve. That's what I told our team. Let's move forward and figure out a way to improve."
Texas Tech finished the game shooting 9-for-22 (40.9%) from beyond the arc and was 10-for-13 from the free-throw line. The Red Raiders committed 17 turnovers and saw the Sun Devils have a 21-6 scoring advantage off turnovers. ASU was 7-for-18 (38.9%) on 3-pointers and 13-of-17 at the free-throw line. Odum led ASU with 23 points after going 8-of-8 at the free-throw line while Massamba Diop added 14 points and Santiago Trouet went for 13 points and six rebounds.
Arizona State closed out the first half on an 8-0 run and led 37-36 going into halftime after the Red Raiders had led by seven with two minutes remaining in the half. Toppin led Tech with nine points and five rebounds in the first half while Anderson had eight points, four rebounds and three assists. The Red Raiders were only 4-for-11 on 3-pointers in the half with Atwell making two and having six points while Anderson was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Watts added five points and three rebounds and Moseley and Horner had four each off the bench. Tech had a 17-13 rebounding advantage in the first half but also had eight turnovers to only four from the Sun Devils. Watts opened scoring with a backdown on Tech's first possession before an Atwell 3-pointer gave Tech a 5-0 run to start the game. Tech led 10-4 on Anderson's first 3-pointer but was down 16-12 after an 8-0 run by ASU that was stopped by a Watts free throw. Tech tied the game at 18-all on Atwell's second 3 and went up 25-20 with a 7-0 run after back-to-back baskets from Moseley and Horner. Anderson's second 3 gave Tech a 36-29 lead before ASU's run to end the half. Odum led ASU with 10 points while Diop had nine points and Odum scored eight through 20 minutes of play. ASU went into the break shooting 4-for-10 on 3-pointers and had a 14-4 scoring advantage off turnovers.
