Pair of 71s lead Tech into seventh at MountainView

TUCSON, Ariz. — Behind a pair of under-par rounds from Denisa Vodickova and Lauren Zaretsky, Texas Tech opened play at the MountainView Collegiate in seventh place on Friday at The Preserve Golf Club at Saddlebrooke.
The Red Raiders posted a 2-over 290 in the opening round and sit seventh in the 16-team field. Vodickova and Zaretsky each fired 1-under 71s to lead Tech, with the duo tied for ninth place among the 87-player field.
Zaretsky turned in one of the low nines of the day, reaching 3-under at the turn before finishing at 1-under after a 2-over back nine. Vodickova played a steady front side with nine pars before recording two birdies against one bogey on the back nine to also finish under par.
Cameron Freund and Klara Hurtova are tied for 41st after matching rounds of 2-over 74. Freund was 3-under and bogey-free through 15 holes before a late stretch dropped her back to 2-over. Hurtova rebounded from 4-over through 11 holes with two birdies and five pars down the stretch to climb back into position.
Maja Ambroziak rounded out the lineup tied for 60th at 4-over 76.
Texas Tech will continue play on Saturday with second-round tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. MST.
