Lady Raiders fall to BYU

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the No. 53 BYU Cougars, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) earned the doubles point to open the match against the BYU Cougars (15-4, 4-3 Big 12) after dropping the set on court three. No. 38-ranked Lady Raider duo Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy took down Cougar duo Gracie Levelston and Karina Mohamed, 6-1, on court one to open up doubles. Shortly following, Polina Sleptsova and Ella Brownback dropped their match on court three after Bella Lewis and Sue Yan Tan won, 6-2. After being down 3-5 on court two Mariia Hlahola and Elena Daskalova fought back to clinch the doubles point over Kendall Kovick and YuYun Chen in a tiebreaker set, 7-6 (2).
To continue the Lady Raiders' momentum into singles play, Dmitrichenko took down Kovick in straight sets on court two, 6-4, 6-0. The Cougars then earned singles points on court three over Hlahola, 6-2, 6-3, and on court five over Havana Kadi, 6-2, 6-3, to tie things at 2-all. On court one, Murphy gave the Lady Raiders back the lead with a win over Levelston, 7-5, 6-2. However, BYU brought the score back to a tie at 3-3 after play on court six resulted in a loss for Brownback, 7-6 (3), 6-2. To clinch the match, Chen defeated Sleptsova in a third set to give BYU a ranked team win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Up next, the Lady Raiders play the Colorado Buffaloes at home next Saturday at 12 p.m. in the McLeod Tennis Center.
