The Red Raiders got walked off in extras despite 23 hits
FORT WORTH – Despite leading 3-0 early and 9-8 heading to the bottom of the 13th, Texas Tech Baseball got walked off 10-9 by TCU Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.
Down by a pair (8-6) heading to the ninth, Texas Tech (16-10, 4-4 Big 12) rallied for a pair of ninth inning two-out runs on an RBI double from catcher Matt Quintanar and an RBI single from freshman Jesse Ruisnek.
Appearing both at the plate and on the mound, Rusinek went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and tossed two scoreless innings and whiffed four.
Turning to another position player on the mound to try and extend the game, the Red Raiders got a 1-2-3 ninth from third baseman turned reliever Connor Shouse to send the game to extras.
In the top of the 10th, the Red Raiders got a two-out double from Shouse and an intentional walk to place two-on with two outs, but TCUs (16-10, 4-4 Big 12) Trever Baumler ended the frame with a strike out.
Baumler, who earned the win Saturday night, tossed four innings of one run ball. He struck out four and allowed six hits.
In TCUs half of the 10th, the Horned Frogs placed the winning run on second with two outs, but Rusinek was able to fan the next TCU batter on a full count.
Looking to scratch across a run, the Red Raiders got a lead-off single from Coleman Ryan who stood at first base with one out.
On the second pitch Rusinek saw, the outfielder and reliever ripped a single through the four-hole that Ryan was ultimately thrown out at third base on by TCUs Chase Brunson.
The outfield assist and a popup sent the game to the bottom of the 11th where Rusinek tossed a 1-2-3 frame.
After the Red Raiders scratched across only a two-out single in the top of the 12th, TCU loaded the bases with nobody out on a walk, a single and a bunt hit.
With the winning run just 90 feet away, Tech sophomore Will Jordan used a shallow pop-up to center and back-to-back strikeouts to send the game to the 13th where a two-out Robin
Villeneuve single gave Tech a brief 9-8 lead, before TCU won the game on a single, a double and a sac-fly.
On Saturday, the Red Raiders recorded a season-best 23 hits, out hitting TCU 23-15.
The loss is Tech's first this season when outhitting their opponent. The Red Raiders were previously 14-0 when out hitting their opponent.
In the setback, five Red Raiders had three or more hits including left fielder Logan Hughes who went 4-for-6 with two runs scored a home run and two RBIs.
The contest which was delayed by nearly two hours pregame due to weather last four hours and 42 minutes and was the longest game (by innings) for a Red Raider squad since 2023 when the Red Raiders fell 4-2 in 16 innings to Texas A&M in Houston.
