LUBBOCK – No. 10 Texas Tech had its three-game winning streak end with a 73-65 loss to TCU on Tuesday in the home finale at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders (22-8, 12-5 Big 12) were unable to overcome 15 turnovers and being out-rebounded by a 39-25 margin by the Horned Frogs (20-10, 10-7 Big 12) who extended their winning streak to four.
"We've improved over the last four games in every area and I thought we were prepared for tonight, but Coach Dixon and their team have been doing this to a lot of teams," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland. "They've been rebounding and getting to the free-throw line. I love that we can get exposed now so that we can learn from it. That's what I'm excited about. This has been our deal. When we're scrappy on the glass and can get 50-50 balls and come up with the in-between plays, we're awesome. And when we don't, this is what we get. We'll keep leaning into that and get our guys to embrace it too on nights when it feels hard."
Tech, which went 14-2 at home this season, will now conclude its regular season with a road game against BYU at 9:30 p.m. (CST) on Saturday at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. The Red Raiders earned an 84-71 win in the first matchup against the Cougars on January 17 in Lubbock.
Donovan Atwell led the Red Raiders with 19 points after making five 3-pointers in the loss to TCU while Jaylen Petty scored 17 points after matching a career-high with five 3-pointers. Christian Anderson added 11 points and nine assists and Josiah Moseley led the reserves with eight points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Petty finished the game shooting 5-of-7 on 3-pointers for the Red Raiders who were 11-of-32 (34.4%) as a team from beyond the arc. Anderson now has 224 assists this season, just two away from matching Elijah Hawkins who established the Tech record with 226 last season. Anderson is averaging 19.1 points and 7.7 assists per game while Atwell has made five or more 3s in 11 games this season. He is scoring 13.3 points per game, shooting 45.8% on 3-pointers and extended his new program record that is now at 115 made 3-pointers for the season.
A 50-50 game midway through the second half would be led the remainder of the way by TCU after a Xavier Edmonds made a pair of free throws for the Horned Frogs who took a 52-50 lead with 9:13 remaining. TCU would go up by as many as nine but the lead would be trimmed to 69-65 following a Moseley dunk, Petty layup and then Atwell's fifth 3-pointer in the final minute. Edmonds would respond to Atwell's 3 with a second-chance basket and two free throws by Micah Robinson after a missed 3 by Atwell sealed it.
TCU finished the game with a 16-7 advantage on offensive rebounds and had an 18-11 scoring advantage off turnovers. Inside, the Horned Frogs outscored the Red Raiders by a 38-22 margin in the paint. Tech, which was playing its fourth game without all-American JT Toppin who suffered a season-ending injury at Arizona State, also lost some depth inside with Luke Bamgboye getting into foul trouble and ultimately fouling out. TCU took advantage with Robinson finishing with 15 points and Edmonds recording a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. David Punch added 10 rebounds and six points. TCU finished the game 10-for-15 at the free-throw line, led by Edmonds who was 6-of-8.
"Those guys are good," McCasland said. "Really good. I love their team and how they attack the glass. It's awesome to watch and we just didn't have the right fight to do it and we'll get better because of it."
