No. 21 Tech falls to K-State at Big 12 Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 21 Texas Tech Lady Raiders fell to the Kansas State Wildcats in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament by a 58-51 score on Thursday afternoon.
Texas Tech (25-7) was led in points by Snudda Collins as she totaled 14 against the Wildcats (17-16). Collins recorded her 27th double-figure scoring game of the year while adding three rebounds and an assist. Gemma Núñez was just behind with nine points, and added six rebounds and a team-best of three steals. This was her 20th game with 5-plus rebounds and her team-best 11th game with three or more steals.
Sarengbe Sanogo led the team with a season-high of seven rebounds, while Bailey Maupin tallied eight points and three steals in the game. The Lady Raiders posted seven blocks in the game and made six 3-pointers. Texas Tech also outrebounded Kansas State, 40-39, with 14 offensive boards.
Texas Tech went on a 5-0 run to begin the first quarter after Denae Fritz hit a three, then Núñez grabbed a steal and scored a fastbreak layup. Kansas State made a 3-pointer to cut into the lead, but Núñez made another layup to maintain the momentum. The Wildcats responded with a layup of their own, then Núñez got a three to make it 10-5. Núñez made two free throws before K-State score a layup on a fastbreak as Tech led 12-9 heading into the media timeout. Out of the timeout, Maupin connected with two free throws for a five-point advantage. Collins came in and scored a free throw and a 3-pointer. Then, Jada Malone added a midrange jumper before Collins ended the quarter with another free throw to give Tech a 21-9 lead after one.
Kansas State stopped the Tech run immediately at the start of the second period, hitting a three to make it 21-12. Tech got a free throw from Collins, but the Wildcats made another three. The Lady Raiders went on a quick, 4-0 run thanks to buckets from Collins. K-State responded with a 4-0 run of their own before Malone scored a tough layup in the paint before the media timeout for the 28-19 advantage. Jalynn Bristow scored a triple out of the timeout thanks to an offensive rebound from Núñez. However, Kansas State answered with a 10-0 run to cut their deficit to just two. But, Maupin hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to make it 34-29 at the half. Â
Sanogo converted a successful and-one opportunity for three points to begin the third. Kansas State scored five-straight points in response until Collins made two free throws with 5:34 left. Sidney Love came in and scored a jumper for the 41-34 lead at 4:21. Both teams remained scoreless until Kansas State made a triple almost three minutes later. Malone scored three free throws then Maupin nailed another last-second 3-pointer to give Tech a 47-37 lead at the end of the period.
Texas Tech got back-to-back buckets from Bristow and Collins to force a Kansas State timeout with 7:42 left in the game and a 51-37 advantage. The Wildcats went on a 14-0 run over the next four and a half minutes of play to tie things at 51-51 with 3:30 left in the game. K-State took its first lead of the game with a free throw at 2:39. The Wildcats went up 54-51 with 52 seconds left, then held on to the lead, winning the game by a 58-51 score.
