Brett Masi embarks on his fifth season as head coach of the Texas Tech men’s tennis program. He has posted a 75-44 record over his first four seasons and led the Red Raiders to three total NCAA Tournament appearances.
Texas Tech has secured seven of the program’s ten victories over ITA Top 10 opponents and notched 18 wins versus ITA Top 25 schools under Masi.
Masi, the 2016 Big 12 Co-Head Coach of the Year, guided Texas Tech to a share of the program’s first Big 12 regular season championship and the program’s first championship match appearance at the Big 12 Tournament in his first season. He is only the fourth Tech coach to win a conference championship during his first season joining Virgil Ballard (Men’s Basketball – 1935), DeWitt Weaver (Football – 1951) and Danny Mason (Men’s Golf – 1971).
The Red Raiders jumped out to a 21-2 start and racked up a program single-season record 28 victories. Texas Tech spent the entire season ranked among the ITA’s Top 20 for the first time in school history. The stretch was highlighted by six straight weeks in the ITA Top 10 from February 17 to March 22, and Tech rose to a program-high No. 6 on February 23.
Texas Tech collected nine victories over fellow ITA Top 25 squads which include a quartet of teams who finished inside the nation’s Top 10 in No. 3 TCU, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Georgia and No. 10 Florida. The Red Raiders wrapped the 2016 season with a program-best No. 11 ITA final ranking and also played host to the program’s first NCAA Tournament matches since the 2005 season.
Texas Tech had three players secure All-Big 12 singles accolades for the third time in program history. Felipe Soares picked up his third All-Big 12 First-Team selection, while Jolan Cailleau and Alex Sendegeya registered All-Big 12 Second-Team honors. In doubles, Soares and Hugo Dojas garnered ITA All-American status for the second consecutive season. The duo claimed the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships and the ITA Texas Regionals titles.
Masi arrived in Lubbock after he spent six seasons as head coach at the University of San Diego. He built the Toreros into West Coast Conference dynasty fueled by five straight NCAA Tournament trips (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) coupled with three WCC regular season (2011, 2014, 2015) and two WCC Tournament championships (2014, 2015). USD compiled a 108-48 record and ripped off 23 consecutive WCC wins to finish Masi’s tenure. The 2011 WCC title marked the program’s first conference championship dating back to the 1989 season.
Masi was a three-time ITA Southwest Regional Coach of the Year (2011, 2013, 2015) and two-time WCC Coach of the Year (2011, 2015) award winner. The Toreros amassed two WCC Player of the Year, two WCC Freshman of the Year and 24 All-WCC selections during the six-year span with Masi at the helm. Nikola Bubnic was a three-time All-WCC First-Team pick followed by Dean Jackson, Patrick Pohlmann and Clarke Spinosa as two-time All-WCC First-Team honorees. Jackson and Uros Petronijevic were the 2011 and 2015 WCC Player of the Year, respectively. In the classroom, USD also had 12 WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, three WCC All-Academic and one ITA Scholar-Athlete recipient.
Masi handled the assistant coach duties at the University of Southern California from 2005-09 under head coach Peter Smith. The Trojans captured the first of four straight NCAA National Championships in 2009 with a 4-1 win over No. 3 seed Ohio State after back-to-back trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2007 and 2008. Masi was named the 2007 & 2008 ITA’s West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Masi began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant for the men’s and women’s programs at Santa Clara during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. He shared responsibilities of individual workouts, strength and conditioning, recruiting and summer camp instruction with the Broncos.
Masi also spent time working at the Peter Smith Tennis Academy (2004-09), Martin Luther King High School in Riverside (2001-02), Cal Poly (2000-01) and IMG Academy-Los Angeles (2000) prior to becoming a head coach.
Masi was a four-year letterwinner at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he remains one of the program’s all-time winningest players. He concluded his career with a 60-29 singles record and played among the top three spots of the lineup since his freshman season. Masi climbed as high as No. 38 in the ITA singles rankings in 2000 and notched All-Big West First-Team honors as a senior. He was a four-time Ivy League singles and doubles champion at Riverside Poly High School.
Masi graduated from Cal Poly in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation administration. He earned his Master’s degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University in 2002.
Masi and his wife, Desiree, have two children: son, Jaxson and daughter, Devyn.
