Texas Tech Fifth at Big 12 Women's Golf Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The 25th-ranked Texas Tech women's golf team will need a strong performance on Sunday to make up ground in the 1998 Big 12 Conference Women's Golf Championships.
The Red Raiders, in fifth with a two-day total of 627, are 16 shots off 11th-ranked Texas A&M's pace of 611. A&M holds a seven-shot lead over Oklahoma (618) and an eight-shot bulge over No. 12 Oklahoma State (619). Defending champ and No. 13 Texas (620) is in fourth place.
Sunday's 18-hole final round will begin off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees from 8:00 a.m. to 9:12 a.m. on the par 72, 6,013-yard Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course.
"It's kind of one of those good news, bad news situations," Texas Tech head coach Jeff Mitchell said. "We didn't play real well, that was the bad news. The good news was we really didn't lose a lot of ground to the leaders. I think we are still in pretty good shape to make a run. We haven't had our good round yet. We are certainly capable of shooting 300 or better if everybody can get it together at the same time. We have a great chance to finish in the top two or top three."
Host Oklahoma made up the most ground among the leaders with a 305 on Saturday to vault into second place. Of the 12 teams, only Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Missouri had a higher second round than the first.
"Obviously, we are going to have to get off to a good start," Mitchell said. "That's what probably hurt us the worst today. After five holes, we were 15, 16 over. We really played pretty well after that, played well on the back nine. So, if we can get off to a real good start, make up some ground real early, I still think we have a shot at it."
Texas Tech junior All-America candidate Brooke Lowrance, the Big 12's highest ranked golfer at No. 26, is five shots off the pace at 9-over-par 153. She remained tied for sixth after firing a 5-over 77 on Saturday.
Texas A&M's 45th-ranked Isabelle Rosberg, with a 4-over 148, has a three-shot advantage over Missouri's Stefanie Mitchell (151). Six golfers enter Sunday's final round six shots off the lead.
"Brooke Lowrance is playing pretty well, other than a couple of holes both of the last two days," Mitchell said. "I think she will play well Sunday. She has a real good shot of finishing in the top couple. That would be a great finish for her going into regionals."
Tech senior Kristin Kight is tied for 16th at 157. She shot a 6-over 78 on Saturday. Freshman Priscillia Hunt's 6-over 78 today, thanks to a 1-under 35 on the back nine, moved her up to a tie for 20th at 158.
Sophomore Jamie Vannoy, who tied for first in her last tournament at the Utah-Dixie Classic earlier this month, is tied for 26th at 159 after a 7-over 79. Junior Beth Covington, who shot a 9-over 81 today, remained in a tie for 37th.
