LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech will be hosting its only home tournament, the Jeannine McHaney Invitational, beginning on Monday, September 18. The event will play out at the Red Raiders' home facility, the par 72 Rawls Course. The first 36 holes of the tournament will take place on Monday, with the conclusion to the invite taking place on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Play is set to begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 with the second round schedule for 1:30. Tuesday will also begin with an 8:15 shotgun start.
ON THE COURSE Tech will have the advantage of playing on their most familiar course, The Rawls Course. With his generous donation, the course is named after Jerry S. Rawls. The last collegiate event that was held at the Rawls was the 2005 Women's Central Regional. Tech finished in 16th place with rounds of 301-318-313--932. Megan Hull tied for 13th as the top Red Raider, hitting 75-73-77--225.
Auburn took the top spot at the regional that year, shooting rounds of 294-309-293--896. The Tigers also finished with the individual title as well in Diana Ramage. Ramage shot rounds of 68-77-67--212 to take first.
The Rawls Course has hosted the Jeannine McHaney Invitational one other year, in 2004.
A PAGE IN HISTORY The last edition of the Jeannine McHaney Invitational was played out in 2004. After the first round, Tech was in a tie for ninth with a 306. The second day was rained out, forcing the tournament to be cut to two rounds. During the final round, the Red Raiders improved by three shots and were able to move ahead two places to finish in seventh. Tech finished with a 33-over 609. Tech's top finisher was Valerie Tan, who tied for sixth firing rounds of 75-73--148.
Notre Dame finished in the lead position with rounds of 296-297--593. Oklahoma, the top returning school, was four shots behind the Fighting Irish. The Sooners turned in rounds of 298-299--597.
Prior to the 2004 Jeannine McHaney, the tournament was played at the Lubbock Country Club. In 1999, Tech took their first title in the event, finishing one shot ahead of Oklahoma. The Red Raiders fired rounds of 307-316-296--919. Tech's top finisher, Jamie Vanney, took second placec with a 9-over 225.
THE COMPETITION Sixteen squads will compete in the second edition of the Jeannine McHaney that will be played at The Rawls Course. Tech will be supplying two teams to the field, with a Red and Black squad.
The top team travelling to Lubbock will be SMU, who comes in with a No. 27 ranking from the final Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index of 2005-06. TCU is the only other team ranked in the top 50, as they are listed as No. 42.
No. 64 Oklahoma, No. 65 Florida International, No. 74 San Francisco, No. 86 Mississippi, No. 89 Arkansas-Little Rock and No. 90 UTEP round out the top 100 teams. Also competing at the McHaney Invite are Western Michigan, Oral Roberts, Arkansas State, Sam Houston State, Texas-San Antonio and Redlands C.C.
