NAMPA, Idaho - Despite having not competed in nearly six weeks, junior long jumper Bryce Lamb had little difficulty turning in a memorable performance Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
On a familiar stage the two-time All-American garnered a third place finish in the long jump with a leap of 25'-9.50" on his third attempt. It marked his third consecutive top-five finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
"I'm so proud of him," head coach Wes Kittley said. "To have him come in here with no competition in the last month and come in fourth, I'm really proud of that."
Lamb was one of four Texas Tech athletes to compete Friday night in the opening day of the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho. Tech has eight athletes set to compete throughout the two-day meet.
In the preliminary round of the women's 60 meter hurdles, junior Katie Grimes finished 10th with a time of 8.22. The time marked her third-fastest time of the season.
Grimes finished her indoor season as the school record holder in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.20 which she recorded at the UNM Don Kirby Collegiate Elite on Feb. 4. She ends the indoor season with each of the top-five marks in school history in the 60 meter hurdles, four of which she set this year.
"Katie has been probably the most consistent person we have had this year," Kittley said. "She is just unbelievably consistent every week. She just barely missed out on making the final. She had a breakthrough year indoors and I think it's going to carry over into the outdoor season."
Sophomore Kyal Meyers finished 11th in the men's pole vault competition. Meyers cleared each of the first two bars at 17'-0.75" and 17'-4.50" before failing to clear 17'-8.50".
Kelly Closse, the 2012 Women's Mountain Region Field Athlete of the Year recipient finished 12th in the weight throw with a toss of 63'-5.00". Closse will also compete in the shot put competition Saturday.
The women's 4x400 relay team, which enters this weekend ranked No. 13 nationally with a season-best time of 3:34.51, will compete Saturday in the final day of competition.
