FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Texas Tech Lady Raider cross country team took fifth place at the Chile Pepper Festival, in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.
Leading the way for the Lady Raiders was Sharlene Nickle, who finished the 5,000 meters in 16:53.7, good enough for 13th place. On her heels was teammate Jocelyn Caro, who took 15th place, finishing in 16:54.8. Texas Tech finished in fifth place overall.
"The women did a good job competing in today's race," Texas Tech head coach Jon Murray said. "There were quite a few personal best performances across the board. This is a good indication of progress in their training."
Erica Brown and Madeline Livergood were the next two Red Raiders to cross the finish line, taking 51st and 52nd, respectively, with times of 17:52.3 and 17:52.7.
On the men's side, as he has all season, Evans Tuitoek led the way for the Red Raiders, taking 58th in a loaded field of runners, with a time of 25:20.0. He was joined in the top 70 by Nick Rivera, who navigated the 8,000-meter course in 25:30.6, good enough to place 67th out of the 430 competitors.
"The men struggled a bit out there," Murray said. "They can and will do better. There are a few things I saw today that we will address in the coming weeks as we move toward the postseason."
As a team, the Texas Tech men finished in 12th place, with a score of 277.
For the second-straight meet, Texas Tech went up against some stiff competition, including Arkansas, Drake, Lamar, UTEP and fellow Big 12 members Kansas State, TCU and Baylor.
The Red Raiders will be back in action on Oct. 18, at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, in Terre Haute, Ind.
