Texas Tech Cross Country Set To Open 2016 In Ruidoso

The Red Raiders open the year in Ruidoso at the Texas Tech Open on Friday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's & women's cross country teams kick off the 2016 season on Friday, Sept. 2, in Ruidoso, New Mexico, as they hold the Texas Tech Open at the Ruidoso fitness trail.

The fitness trail is located behind US Forest Service Ranger Station on the corner of Mechem Drive and Cedar Creek Road in Ruidoso.

The Red Raiders and New Mexico State will begin at 4 p.m. CDT, with the women's race (4523 meters), followed by the men's event (6195 meters).

Leading the way for the women's team is senior Jocelyn Caro, who racked up All-Big 12 performer honors after finishing seventh at the conference meet in 2015, while also posting the top mark at the NCAA Mountain Regional. She'll be flanked by junior Jasmine Torres and sophomore Hattie Schunk, who was the recipient of the 2016 Goldwater Scholarship.

On the men's side, seniors Benard Keter and Nick Rivera will help pace the squad, along with junior Miguel Bautista. Bautista had the top time at the NCAA regional and was either the top or second-place finisher among the Red Raiders in every meet in 2015. Keter is an accomplished cross country athlete, taking the 2014 NAIA title, while placing second at the 2015 at Wayland Baptist. Â Â
