Â
The Lady Raiders (1-1) and the Golden Lions (2-0) are slated for a 2 p.m. tip off, which will be streamed live on TexasTech.TV, and can be heard on the Texas Tech Sports Network on 107.7 FM. As always, live stats will also be available via TexasTech.Statbroadcast.com.
Â
Sunday will be the fourth meeting between the two programs, who have met every other year since 2013, with the first matchup coming in 2009. All three games have been played in Lubbock and have treated the Lady Raiders to a 3-0 lead in the series. Two of the three meetings have resulted in 30+ point victories for Tech, taking down the Golden Lions by scores of: 97-57 (2009) & 84-40 (2015), along with a 58-50 win in 2013. The Lady Raiders are also 17-1 all-time against members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Â
Tech continues its home stand with game three of six-straight contests at the United Supermarkets Arena. After falling in the season opener to Texas State, the Lady Raiders rebounded to an 82-63 rout of Florida A&M on Wednesday to pick up their first win of the year. After Sunday's contest, Tech will take on UMass Lowell (Nov. 22), Texas A&M (Nov. 26) and LSU (Nov. 30) to wrap the first home stretch of games.
Â
In the first-ever meeting between Tech and Florida A&M, the Lady Raiders pounced on the Rattlers for a 19-point victory. Four different student-athletes racked up double-digit point totals, with senior Brielle Blaire leading the charge with 18 points. It was part of a double-double performance for Blaire, her first of her career, after pulling down 11 rebounds, 10 on the defensive side of the court.
Â
Sophomore Brittany Brewer (15), senior Dayo Olabode (12) and freshman Lyndsey Whilby (11) all joined Blaire with double-digit point outputs, helping Tech to a 46.5 percent field goal percentage against the Rattlers. In both games this season, junior Recee' Caldwell has paced the team in assists, serving up 11 on Wednesday against Florida A&M to raise her season total to 18.
Â
It was the fourth annual Education Day for the Lady Raiders, which has been very kind to Tech over the years. The Lady Raiders improved to 4-0 on Education Day with the win over the Rattlers, also picking up double-digit wins over Houston (Dec. 7, 2016 – 84-60), Niagara (Nov. 11, 2015 – 79-45), and Abilene Christian (Dec. 3, 2014 – 61-44).
Â
The Golden Lions come to Lubbock with a spotless 2-0 record to begin the 2017-18 season. UAPB picked up a 71-51 victory over Tougaloo College in its home opener, then followed it up with an 81-73 win over Philander Smith College on Thursday night. Sunday's contest will be the first road matchup this year for the Golden Lions.
Â
In the season opener, UPAB spread the scoring between 11 different players, with Malik Muhammad and Shawntayla Harris leading the way with 12 points each. Their most recent game found a jumble of point scorers, with four producing double-digit efforts, as Faith Ohanta fired off 30 points to lead the way. Ohanta (13 rebounds) was one of two on the team to finish with a double-double, as Harris also recorded 14 points and 12 boards against Philander Smith.
Â
Despite a small sample size, the Lady Raiders are ranked among the leaders in the conference and around the country in several categories. Tech has remained disciplined throughout two games, picking up the fewest number of fouls in the Big 12 at 22, which ranks 24th in the country. Their average sits at 2nd in the country just behind Iowa, who leads with earning 8.7 per game.
Â
Individually, Caldwell leads the conference in assists (18) and assists per game (9.0), which is good for 17th and fourth in the NCAA, respectively. Senior Jada Terry, who went off for 22 points in the season opener against Texas State, ranks second in the conference and seventh in the country in field goal percentage, with a cool 81.3 clip heading into Sunday's contest.
Â
After a date with the Golden Lions, the Lady Raiders take on UMass Lowell on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 3 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena.
