Sofia Garcia led the Lady Raiders with a 4-under 68 Sunday in head-to-head victory over No. 13 Purdue
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach JoJo Robertson received the type of play she hoped to see to start the spring Sunday morning.
Â
Backed by a 4-under-par 68 round from freshman Sofia Garcia, Texas Tech topped No. 13 Purdue over 18 holes of stroke play Sunday afternoon at the Forest Glen Golf and Country Club in Naples, Florida.
Â
The Lady Raiders, who entered the spring ranked 41st nationally by Golfweek, combined to shoot a 4-over 292, topping the Boilermakers by 12 strokes for a key head-to-head victory early in the spring season.
Â
"I'm really proud of the team and their play today," said Robertson, a former Purdue assistant coach before taking the reins of the Tech program prior to the 2009-10 campaign. "It was a great first competition day of the spring season. Sofia's round today was very impressive and showed what she's capable of."
Â
Garcia fired her lowest 18-hole score of her still young collegiate career, topping her previous mark by a single stroke. She led all players with a 4-under round that pushed Tech to its seventh-lowest 18-hole score this season.
Â
In addition to Garcia, Tech also benefited from 2-over 74 cards from both Gabby Barker and Lauren Mason as well as a 4-over round from Mami Yamamoto. Caralyn Barker contributed Tech's final score with a 7-over 79 round.
Â
The Lady Raiders will see Purdue again in just under a week as both teams will take part in the annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic held in San Juan. The three-day tournament begins Sunday morning at the Rio Mar Country Club.
