April 22, 2017 | Baseball
The Red Raiders pile on 15 hits to force a rubber-match on Sunday at Rip Griffin Park
Â
The 15-hit win marked the third time that the Red Raiders (33-9, 9-5) reached the hit total in Big 12 play. It was also the seventh time in the last eight games with 10 or more hits in a contest and 23rd overall this season. Tech held the Cowboys (22-16, 5-9) just four hits, making it the sixth time in conference action to do so, while striking out 14 between two pitchers.
Â
Sophomore lefty Steven Gingery threw down his 10th quality start in 10 appearances this season, going 6.0 frames against the Cowboys. Hiss total made up nine of 14 combined strikeouts for the Red Raiders, including a stretch of five consecutive punch outs from end of the first to the beginning of the third innings. The win improved Gingery to a Big 12-best 8-0, while Tech improved to 9-1 in games he's pitched.
Â
Freshman right-hander Caleb Killian was called from the pen in the seventh and finished off game two for his second save of the year. His 3.0 IP matched a career-high, while firing off a career-best five strikeouts and allowing only two hits.
Â
Nine Red Raiders recorded at least one base hit on Saturday, with four producing multi-hit bids. Junior infielder Orlando Garcia tallied his third multi-hit game in five contests, racking up three hits, three RBI and a run scored, increasing his Big 12-leading RBI total to 44. Freshman infielder Josh Jung added his second-straight game with three or more knocks, picking up three along with two runs scored.
Â
After a home run over the right field bullpen from OSU in the third, Tech countered with a four-run spurt in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 lead. It was the 24th time this season the Red Raiders had scored four or more runs in an inning.
Â
Senior infielder Hunter Hargrove led off with a two-RBI single to right field, plating Brian Klein and Josh Jung who reached base on a single and an error, respectively. Michael Davis added the third run via an RBI groundout, scoring Hargrove from third, who was moved over on a Berglund single. A wild pitch sent Berglund over to third with two gone and was fulfilled by an infield single from Garcia to complete the four-run third.
Â
After two quiet innings, Garcia unloaded a two-run bomb into the right field bullpen to make it 6-1. The dinger scored Davis, who reached earlier in the frame on a fielder's choice. It was Garcia's ninth home run of the season, giving him at least one in both home conference series in 2017.
Â
Tech tacked on two more in the seventh for good measure, as Jung laced a triple down the right field line to begin the frame. Enter Hunter Hargrove, who smacked a double to the wall in right-center, easily scoring Jung. Hargrove moved around the bases quickly after a grounder and a single from Davis to cap the eight-run day.
Â
OSU added one in the final frame behind a pair of doubles from Cabbiness & McCain to complete the 8-2 final.
Â
The rubber match-up is set for another 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, April 22, at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
