Texas Tech opens the Jim West Challenge at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in San Marcos
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf program opens its final tournament of the fall season Sunday when the Red Raiders tee off at the Jim West Challenge held at the Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas.
Â
The Red Raiders will be the fourth-highest ranked school in the 15-team field as Tech is currently at No. 32 in the latest Golfweek Magazine poll. The field also features No. 21 Florida State, No. 22 Miami, No. 28 Oklahoma and No. 40 TCU for the 54-hole, two-day format.
Â
Tech head coach JoJo Robertson will utilize the same lineup for the second-consecutive event as she will send senior Mami Yamamoto out with sophomores Sofia Garcia and Amy Taylor as well as freshmen Cecilie Nielsen and Anna Dong. That lineup finished fifth at the Betsy Rawls Invitational just over a week ago, topping then-No. 1 Alabama in the process by an impressive 14 strokes.
Â
Garcia sank seven birdies alone during the final round of the Betsy Rawls Invitational, securing her third straight top-15 showing to start the season. Garcia, who shared medalist honors earlier in the month at the Illini Invitational, is averaging only 71.3 strokes per round thus far in her return from a season-ending injury a year ago.
Â
The Red Raiders have finished fourth or better in three of the last four years at the Jim West Challenge as Tech ended in third place in both 2014 and 2017 and then fourth in 2015. Garcia concluded the tournament at 8-under-par a year ago to finish in a tie for sixth individually in what was her only appearance during the 2017-18 campaign.
Â
Yamamoto, meanwhile, is no stranger herself to the Jim West Challenge as she will be competing in the event for the fourth time in her career. Yamamoto drained her first career hole-in-one at the tournament in 2015 en route to a top-30 showing that year as well as in 2017.
Â
Tech will play 36 holes Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start to begin the day. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament at www.birdiefire.com.
