No. 32 Men's Tennis Drops 4-2 Battle on No. 6 TCU
April 22, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders will take on Oklahoma during Friday’s opening round at the Big 12 Championships.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 32 Texas Tech men's tennis team pushed Big 12 regular season champion and No. 6 TCU to a 4-2 decision during the regular season finale for both squads on Sunday at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (19-9, 1-4 Big 12) celebrated the careers of Connor Curry and Alex Sendegeya as part of Senior Day ceremonies prior to the match. Next up, Texas Tech will turn its attention to the Big 12 Championships and square off with No. 17 Oklahoma in Friday's opening round.
TCU (18-4, 5-0 Big 12) extended its winning streak to 12 consecutive matches since March 2 and capped its second straight unbeaten regular season in the Big 12.
"I told the guys inside the locker room how proud I was of them," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Almost even more proud than the win over Texas the other night. I was happy with the level that we played at and how we fought. I thought that was a great tennis match. Credit to TCU, they showed why they're sixth in the country. A late doubles break for them at three, wish we could have got that break because Jackson and Alex were playing so well at one. Across the board, Connor had a great day and got the win on Senior Day. Alex probably played his best match of the year against a Top 20 player even though he didn't get to finish. Guys like Jackson came in and stepped in. It was good match for us to build on all the way around."
Facing a 3-0 hole, Jackson Cobb knocked off Eduardo Roldan by a 6-4, 6-4 score line at the bottom of the lineup. He put together a three-game spurt to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 advantage in set one. Then, Cobb fired out a 4-0 edge in the second set en route to his singles win going back to March 17.
Curry grinded out a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over No. 91 Guillermo Nuñez on court three. He scored the first two points of the tiebreaker and raced out to a 5-2 lead. Curry executed a backhand passing shot up the line which forced Nuñez to misfire on a volley to close out the match and bring the score to 3-2.
The Horned Frogs registered a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 comeback decision from No. 57 Alastair Gray over Ilgiz Valiev in the No. 4 position to clinch the match.
When play was stopped, Alex Sendegeya was locked in 6-4, 6-7 (2), 2-3 battle with No. 19 Alex Rybakov at the top of the lineup.
TCU claimed doubles wins on courts two and three to take the opening point. Gray and Trevor Johnson took down Curry and Valiev by a 6-2 margin followed by a tightly-contested 6-4 decision courtesy of Max Kurzban and Reese Stalder over Matheus Leite and Tommy Mylnikov.
Texas Tech's Sendegeya and Cobb had a break advantage and were in a winning position up 5-4 against the No. 5 pair of Nuñez and Rybakov on court one when doubles action was halted. Sendegeya delivered a forehand winner up the line on a deuce point during the opening game to give the Red Raiders the early service break.
TCU stretched its lead to 3-0 when Stalder and Johnson tucked away straight-set victories over Leite and Mylnikov on courts five and two, respectively.
The Red Raiders will meet No. 17 Oklahoma during Friday's opening round at the Big 12 Championships. Texas Tech has made back-to-back appearances in the event's championship match. First serve will be announced at a later time by the Big 12 Conference from the Texas Tennis Center in Austin.
