No. 30 Men's Tennis Swept by No. 14 Oklahoma
April 27, 2018 | Men's Tennis
AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 30 Texas Tech men's tennis team was handed a 4-0 defeat by No. 14 Oklahoma during Friday's quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championships at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin.
The Red Raiders (19-10) had earned consecutive runner-up finishes at the event under Brett Masi, while Oklahoma (19-4) advances to face No. 15 Texas in the semifinals on Saturday.
The Sooners started quickly in doubles with early breaks and grabbed 3-0 leads on courts one and two. That would provide the difference as No. 68 Alex Bakshi and Jake van Emburgh edged No. 66 Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya by a 6-3 margin at the top of the lineup. Ferran Calvo and Stefano Tsorotiotis also claimed a 6-3 decision over Connor Curry and Ilgiz Valiev on court two.
When play was stopped, Texas Tech's Tommy Mylnikov and Matheus Leite held a 4-3 advantage versus Jochen Bertsch and Adrian Oetzbach at the No. 3 spot.
Oklahoma kept its foot on the gas pedal and rattled of straight-set victories on courts one, two and six to complete the shutout. The fourth point came courtesy of No. 32 Bakshi who notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sendegeya on the No. 1 singles line.
The bright spots for the Red Raiders included Curry and Artem Kapshuk who were on the verge of evening their matches at a set apiece when the match was halted. Both players were up 5-2 after falling 6-3 in their opening sets.
"It was an embarrassing effort for our team today, and I'm not proud of that by any means," Masi said. "Hopefully, the message in the locker room struck a cord and this is another lesson learned. We've had a few of them during the season. Our quality of work and our body of work throughout the season has got us to a point where we should get into the NCAA Tournament. It's about the moment and what you're going to do with it. Hopefully, we respond and learn from it."
Texas Tech will hope to secure an at-large bid and turn its attention to the NCAA Selection Show which will announce the Field of 64 on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. CT.
