LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 8 Texas Tech baseball team kicks off a five-game home stand on Tuesday, May 1, against San Diego at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Red Raiders (33-12) and Toreros (20-24) will meet for the sixth time in the two program's histories in a midweek matchup in Lubbock. Tech holds the lead in the all-time series at 4-1, taking a 3-0 record into Tuesday's game when the contests are playing Lubbock. The two teams first met in 1999 and last played in a three-game set in 2003.

Tech posted a 6-0 shutout victory over TCU on Saturday night in Fort Worth. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian and junior righty Ryan Shetter combined to one-hit the Horned Frogs in the middle game of the series. It was the first combined one-hitter by a Red Raider pitching staff since Duke Von Schamann and Trey Masek christened Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park with the feat on Feb. 17, 2012, against Missouri State.

The Red Raiders still hold the No. 3 spot in the latest NCAA RPI rankings, staying in the top five since the start of the 2018 release of the poll.

Head coach Tim Tadlock will send out freshman Ryan Sublette to start for the Red Raiders on Tuesday afternoon. This season, Sublette has made six starts and nine appearances, racking up 15 strikeouts over 18.0 frames of work. Tech has totaled a team ERA of 4.09 over the 2018 campaign.

He'll face a Torero lineup hitting .280 as a unit, with four starters above the team average. Junior Jay Schuyler leads the team in almost every offensive category, topping the team in batting average (.353), hits (61) and runs (31). Junior infielder Brhet Bewley paces the squad in RBI with 31. San Diego has tagged opponents for a 4.58 ERA this season.

Junior right-handed pitcher Justin Friedman will start for the Toreros on Tuesday. This season, Friedman is 1-2 over 17 appearances & two starts with a 4.82 ERA. Over 28.0 innings, he's allowed 19 runs, 15 earned, on 28 hits & 12 walks, while striking out 17. Overall, the San Diego pitching staff has a 5.46 ERA, while holding opposing hitters to a .276 average the plate.

The Red Raiders have cooled to a .310 clip as a team, which continues to top the conference & ranks sixth in the nation. Sophomore infielder Josh Jung leads six starters above the team average, while also holding the team-highs in hits (72), RBI (50) and runs (53).
