Captains Named for Trip to Lawrence

Texas Tech’s four captains chosen from a group of 16 captains that were elected for the 2019 season

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced Thursday this week's captains as the Red Raiders head to Lawrence to take on the Kansas Jayhawks this Saturday at 6 p.m. from David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

Of the 16 captains elected prior to the start of the season, Jordyn Brooks, Broderick Washington Jr., Eli Howard and Erik Ezukanma will represent the Red Raiders during the coin toss against the Jayhawks.

Brooks has put his name in contention with the top linebackers in college football this season as the senior is in the midst of his best year as a Red Raider thanks to a Big 12-leading 78 tackles already through seven games. He ranks fourth nationally for tackles for a loss per game (1.9), sixth in total tackles per game (11.1) and 10^th for solo tackles per game (6.1).

Washington has also been a consistent presence in the opposing backfield as he has recorded 5.5 tackles for a loss, 1.5 shy of his career high that was set only a year ago. The senior defensive lineman is second on the defense with 32 career starts and leads the line in tackles this season.

Howard has helped Washington anchor the defensive front with 25 career starts entering the weekend. He has been in on a sack in three of four Big 12 matchups so far this season and is Tech's active career leader in sacks with 11.5.

Ezukanma has come on the past three weeks as he has combined for 14 receptions for 217 yards and a touchdown. The talented wideout is one of just three redshirt freshmen tabbed a captain for 2019 and has shown steady improvement as he set a career high in catches against Iowa State with seven grabs.
