Postgame Quotes: Texas Tech vs. Florida A&M
November 18, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Texas Tech Lady Raider Head Coach Marlene Stollings
Opening statement…
"Thanks for being here for us. We really appreciate your support. We had almost 3,000 fans here tonight, another big crowd. We want to continue to build that and get in the top 10 in attendance. So, we're going to keep complimenting our fans when they show up. I know it's a weekday night and it's tough to get here. The young ladies sitting up here had great performances tonight. I'm proud of our team for a few things. Most importantly, one of the things that stood out to me was how we finished the game. Again, same from last game, the second half for us was really solid – it was solid defensively and it was solid from a rebounding standpoint. We were able to get out in transition and take advantage of a lot of things. The 14-made three's that we had tied a school record from back in Coach Sharp's era in 2004. Shooting them at 56 percent was credit to our young ladies and the time they have been putting in the gym. Brittany getting her 19th double-double and the 36 points in the third quarter was a school record. I'm just really pleased with how well we are sharing the ball. We had four people in double figures again."
On what the team learned from Florida A&M's defensive pressure tonight…
"It was very physical and I think that was a good test for us because Big 12 play is going to be physical for us every single night. We had a great crew out there tonight that let us play. It was important for our team to feel that, if you will, in only our second game. To be able to push through and understand that you have to still be strong with the ball with the way they (FAMU) were making contact."
On Alexis getting a Big 12 Weekly Award…
"Any time you get a conference award, it's a big deal. We were happy to celebrate that at our pregame meal. It was just announced earlier this afternoon and I couldn't be more excited about where her game can go, the potential that she has and the fact that she earned that after one game playing on the big stage. How she handled that with great poise and maturity is exciting for us as a staff. I know she's going to continue to grow and evolve per game."
On the two 90+ point performances to start the season…
"I think it's credit to our young ladies who put the time in. We had multiple scorers at every single position. It really makes it hard to shut somebody down because the next person is going to step up and have the capability to put the ball in the basket. I think having so many weapons is really what has helped us get that high number here in the first couple of games."
Alexis Tucker, Freshman, Guard
On getting recognized as the Big 12 Freshman of the Week…
"That was amazing. I didn't even know I got it until our team meal and I was excited. I kind of show my excitement a little different. It's great, but now it is just about consistency. Playing every game the same and listening to my coaches and working on the little things."
On getting better stat lines this game…
"There are different things that I can do on the floor, so I think that the points and rebounds will come. I have goals, but being able to do different things on the floor is important. So, just looking at all the stuff that I can do, and just trying to find different things I can do in the game."
Sydney Goodson, Junior, Guard
On how much opening up the three-point line changes the flow of the game…
"It totally changed the flow. I mean it opened things up for us in the inside and opened up our rebounding. It got our confidence, momentum, and the crowd into it. I think when you're hitting shots, you're able to go on different runs and we did that tonight."
On the key to having good perimeter shooting tonight…
"I think it is being in the gym. Nailah and I are always in the gym together and we push each other. She is an incredible teammate and it is super fun getting to work out with her. We both push each other back and forth and we compete the whole time. I think I will credit that to our work ethic."
Brittany Brewer, Senior, Forward
On what has been clicking offensively for the team…
"Our aggression. We also have multiple threats out on the perimeter, which is really important. We can take pressure off each other because people can make their shots."
