Two-seed Red Raiders to have rematch with seven-seed Bears in Kansas City.
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 15 Texas Tech will begin its postseason Sunday with a Big 12 quarterfinal matchup against Baylor. The Red Raiders will enter Kansas City as the two-seed after clinching the runner-up spot in the Big 12 regular season with Thursday's 4-1 win over K-State.Â
Â
Tech's win over the Wildcats made it three straight entering the playoffs. The Red Raiders finished the regular season with 14 wins – their most since 2013. They went 6-1-2 in Big 12 play for their most conference wins since 2014. In the winning effort, Kirsten Davis knocked in two goals to solidify herself as this year's Big 12 scoring leader with 15 to her name.Â
Â
Davis was also responsible for two against Baylor just one week ago in Waco. After a scoreless first half, Davis found the back of the net twice in the second as Tech beat the Bears on the road for the first time since 2007.Â
Â
The Red Raiders and Bears met at the Big 12 Championship last season, where Baylor escaped with a 2-1 overtime victory in the semifinals. Tech earned a spot in the semis after dispatching TCU in penalty kicks in the first round.Â
Â
Head coach Tom Stone is excited for his group to get into tournament play, calling on the depth of the roster.Â
Â
"We're built for the long haul," he said. "We're a deep team, and the tournament rewards deep teams. As you can see, we've played a lot of players. We're excited about our opportunity here."
Â
Tech's depth is not only shown in minutes but goals as well. In 18 games, 12 different Red Raiders have tallied goals. This includes nine goals from five freshman – three of whom come off the bench. Â
Â
Tech's seeding of second will be its highest earned seed since 2013 when they also came in as the two-seed. The Red Raiders downed seven-seed TCU before falling to two-seed Baylor.Â
Â
For the seventh straight season, the Big 12 Championship will be held at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. First touch for Tech's first round game is set for 5:45 p.m. Sunday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
