Another pair of Red Raiders join together in pro ranks.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech defender Rebekah O'Brien announced this week her signing with Morön BK of Sweden's Elitettan division. She will join fellow Red Raider alumni Carly Wickenheiser, who recently completed her first season with the club.
O'Brien's signing will mark the third time in the last 13 months that two former Tech teammates joined together on the same professional team. O'Brien has done so once before, signing with Swedish club Assi IF alongside former Red Raider keeper Lauren Watson in December 2018. In August 2019, Alli Murphy signed with Cassie Boren's Icelandic club UMF Selfoss.
O'Brien's 2019 campaign with Assi IF, also in the Elitettan division, saw her play in 26 games for the club, which finished 10th in the league table. She netted a career-high five goals. Behind her, Watson played all 26 games in net. She recorded four shutouts and held opponents to 1.65 goals per game.
"I am so excited to play with Carly again," O'Brien said. "I enjoyed going through last season with Lauren, so I think this will be another good season with Carly and the rest of the Morön team."
O'Brien's one year with Assi was preceded by a breakout pro debut season with Rävåsens, who play in the first division in Sweden. The defender played in all 26 matches for the club, including all 22 league matches. O'Brien, whose senior season at Tech was in 2017, tallied four goals and two assists for Rävåsens, and for the effort was named the team's Most Valuable Player. She was also recognized as the best defender in the Swedish province of Värmland.
O'Brien will hop onto the Morön back line with a familiar partner: Wickenheiser. Wickenheiser's 2019 – her first as a pro – saw her net three goals in 25 games for the eighth-place club. The former Red Raider Wickenheiser recently re-signed with Morön for the 2020 season, which begins in April.
"I'm super excited to get to play with another former Red Raider again," Wickenheiser said. "I got to play with Beks for three years at Tech, and getting to play with her again in Sweden will be such a cool experience. She has done super well in Sweden, so I am looking forward to wearing the same jersey as her again."
