All eyes on Lubbock as SPC hosts several ranked programs for three-day meet.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech is set to host the country's top meet this weekend with the Texas Tech Invitational. The Sports Performance Center will play host to 12 ranked teams, including the nation's No. 1 men's (Florida State) and women's (USC) programs.
The batch of premier programs visiting Lubbock also includes Arizona, Florida State, Miami (FL), NC State, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech. Big 12 competitors making their way to campus include Baylor and Iowa State.
The Red Raiders are hitting their stride just in time for the meet. So far, three school records have already been taken down in just two weekends. Two records – the 60m hurdles and triple jump – belong to the women's team, who this week was ranked higher than the men for the first time in five years. Ruth Usoro's record-breaking triple mark of 44'-3.25" (13.49m) places her in the national lead and ninth in the world. The women's 4x400 relay group of Gabrielle McDonald, Amanda Crawford, Damajahnee Birch and Jadsia Warden also own the top ranking in the Big 12 with their time of 3:38.48.
The men's group's momentum is also spread across the track and in the field. Gabe Oladipo used last weekend's Red Raider Invitational to smash to school record in the weight throw by over two feet. He did so after coming within just three inches of it in his Tech debut. Oladipo's mark – 69'-10.75" (21.30m) – places him just outside the national top-10.
Sitting firmly in the top-10 and at the top of the conference is Jacolby Shelton, who burst out a career-best 6.62 in the finals of the 60m. Shelton is joined in the top-five of the Big 12 by Derrius Rodgers and his season best of 6.67. Also holding down a conference lead is Jequan Hogan, whose indoor PR of 52'-6.75" (16.02m) from the Corky Classic still has him atop the Big 12 triplers.
The Texas Tech Invitational will begin noon Thursday with combined events. The meet will get underway at 3 p.m. Friday. All three days of action will be streamed on TexasTechTV. Tickets are available here.
