Red Raiders Fall to No. 2 Baylor

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team was swept by No. 2-ranked Baylor on Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena.

Baylor won the match 27-25, 25-21, 25-19 a night after earning a five-set victory in the first matchup between the two teams. Tech will return to action next week with a pair of matches at No. 1-ranked Texas on Thursday and Friday in Austin.

Samantha Sanders led the Red Raiders with 11 kills and had nine digs against Baylor, while Alex Kirby had 33 assists and nine digs. Brooke Kanas added 10 kills with Allison Bloss contributing seven kills.

Emerson Solano led the team with 20 digs in the match and also had three aces. The Red Raiders were limited to a .115 hitting percentage by the Bears who hit .282. Yossiana Pressley led the Bears with 23 kills on a .392 attacking percentage and Callie Williams distributed 32 assists. Baylor finished the match with an 11-2 block advantage.

Baylor opened the match with a 27-25 first-set victory with a block assist from Coleman and Williams following the seventh Tech attack error. The Red Raiders had a 15-14 lead off a Bloss kill and were up 23-21 on an O'Brien kill. Tech had set-point after a Kanas kill had the set at 25-24 before the Bears won the final three points to take the set. Sanders led the Red Raiders with six kills in the first set, while O'Brien and Kanas had four kills each. Kirby contributed 13 assists in the opening set and Dodson led with four digs. Pressley had eight kills through one set to lead the Bears.

The Red Raiders would fall 25-21 in the second set after battling back from a three-point deficit to tie the set at 18-18 on a Sanders kill. Tech and Baylor were tied again at 20-20 following another Sanders kill and a BU error before the Bears ran off four straight points to set up match point. They closed it out and took a 2-0 lead on a Harper kill. Kanas led Tech with four kills in the second set, while Solano had 10 digs and Kirby contributed 12 assists. The Red Raiders were limited to a .116 attacking percentage in the set compared to Baylor which hit .275. Through two sets, Baylor had a 6-2 blocking advantage and was hitting .304 with only six errors.

A kill by Sanders and ace by Solano cut it to one midway through the set and it was tied again at 18 after a Kanas kill and BU error. The Bears ran off three straight points with a pair of kills and a block to regain control of the set and closed out the sweep with four points in a row that ended on a Tech error.

The Red Raiders will return to their home court by hosting Kansas State on Nov. 6-7 after playing the Longhorns next weekend in Austin.
