Red Raiders Drop Opener to No. 1 Texas

The Texas Tech volleyball team fell to No. 1 Texas in three sets
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team was swept by top-ranked Texas Thursday night in Austin.
Texas (9-0) won the first of two matches 25-17, 25-20, 25-12. Texas Tech (3-6) will return to Frank Erwin Arena tomorrow at 6 p.m. for match number two against the Longhorns.
Samantha Sanders led the Red Raiders offensively with 11 kills, followed by Brooke Kanas with nine. Emerson Solano and Alex Kirby each recorded double-digit digs with 19 and 10 respectively. Kirby also finished the night with 28 assists and one block. The Red Raiders hit just .161 as a team while the Longhorns recorded a .391 attacking percentage.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 4-1 advantage early in set one before the Red Raiders battled back to tie things up at seven all. After that the Red Raiders stayed within two points of the Longhorns until Texas used a 7-1 run to claim a 25-17 opening set victory.
The Red Raiders fought hard in the second set but ultimately fell short 25-20. After falling behind 11-6, Tech used a 9-1 run sparked by a kill from Kanas to take a 15-12 lead. An ace from Lindsey Dodson and a Texas setting error caused the Longhorns to take a timeout up 12-11. Out of the timeout Tech tallied four straight points before Texas made a comeback of their own to tie the set at 16 on a Logan Eggleston kill. The Longhorns regained the lead, but the Red Raiders brought it within one point at 20-19 before Texas won five of the next six points to win set two, 25-20.
The third set was all Longhorns as the top-ranked team busted out to a 15-4 lead early and didn't look back defeating the Red Raiders 25-12 to take game one on the week.
Tech will get a second shot at the Longhorns Friday night at 6 p.m., the match will be broadcasted on Longhorn Network.
