Texas Tech tees off at the Kissing Tree Invitational hosted by Texas State on Sunday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 15 Texas Tech women's golf team will wrap its fall slate beginning Sunday when the Red Raiders tee off the first of 54 holes at the Kissing Tree Invitational hosted by Texas State in San Marcos.
Â
This will only be an individual tournament as a team champion will not be crowned. Thus, the Red Raiders will be traveling their entire eight-player roster for the first time this season, which will allow junior Valentina Gilly to make her Red Raider debut after transferring to Texas Tech this summer from Florida International. Â
Â
The Red Raiders will be one of 11 teams competing for the individual title as Tech will be joined by Big 12 foes Baylor, Oklahoma State and TCU as well as Houston, Incarnate Word, Nebraska, SMU, Texas A&M, Tulane, UTSA and the host Bobcats.
Â
Tech is coming off a runner-up finish just over a week ago at the Cowgirl Classic hosted by Oklahoma State where three Red Raiders placed in the top 10, including junior Sofia Garcia, who was second overall for her 13th career top-five showing. She was followed by Anna Dong in a tie for third and Gala Dumez who closed the event in a tie for sixth place.
Â
The performance pushed the Red Raiders to No. 15 in the latest Golfweek Magazine poll, which ranks fourth among Big 12 schools, only behind No. 5 Baylor, No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 14 Oklahoma State. The conference currently boasts nine teams ranked among the publication's top-30 programs.
Â
The Red Raiders have become regulars in San Marcos in recent years as this will be the sixth-consecutive fall Tech has traveled south for a tournament hosted by Texas State. The Bobcats previously hosted the Jim West Challenge each fall, which became a favorite of Garcia as she has posted three top-10 showings in as many appearances.
Â
The tournament will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Sunday morning as the Red Raiders will play 36 holes followed by a final 18 on Monday morning. Live results will be available throughout the tournament at Golfstat.com.
