Sofia Garcia will look to extend her school record with her fifth medalist honor Monday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas – Sofia Garcia combined to shoot 7-under-par over two rounds Sunday to gain a share of the individual lead at the Kissing Tree Invitational hosted by Texas State.
Â
Garcia, who will be searching for her fifth individual title when the tournament concludes with Monday's final round, signed for a 5-under 67 opening round before posting a 2-under round in the afternoon. She is currently in a four-way tie atop the leaderboard with Oklahoma State duo of Isabella Fierro and Lianna Bailey as well as Kate Smith of Nebraska.
Â
Garcia recorded 10 birdies on the day, which is tied for fourth among the 49-player field. Cecilie Nielsen and Gala Dumez both added nine birdies of their own, ranking tied for eighth, respectively, in the category.
Â
Garcia also added an impressive eagle during the opening round at the par-4 18th as she holed out on her approach near the green. It was one of seven eagles during the two rounds by the field, four of which that came from a Red Raider.
Â
Besides Garcia, Dumez is tied for 11th at even par for the two rounds followed by Nielsen at 3-over and in a tie for 21st place and Anna Dong one stroke back of her in a tie for 24th overall. Amy Taylor, meanwhile, is in a tie for 31st at 7-over, while Louisa Brunt and Valentina Gilly are tied for 39th at 9-over and Pyrene Delample is in 49th at 27-over for the tournament.
Â
The Kissing Tree Invitational will crown only an individual champion Monday as team scores are not being kept this week. The tournament will resume with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with live scoring provided throughout the day on Golfstat.com.
