No. 3 Tech Caps Weekend with Second Run-Rule Win
February 16, 2020 | Baseball
Red Raiders outscore their opponents 65-11 over the four game weekend
The 65 runs in a four-game weekend were the most from Tech since 1999, when Tech compiled 81 runs against Howard from Feb. 5-7.
Â
Freshman Jace Jung gave Tech an early 3-0 lead with a bases-clearing double in the first, and Tech (4-0) never looked back, scoring two runs in the third, five in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Â
It marked the second time this weekend Tech run-ruled its opponent in seven innings, also doing so against Houston Baptist by a count of 24-3 on Saturday. The Red Raiders have scored in double figures three straight games, posting the 24 against HBU followed by 22 and 14 against UNC.
Â
The offensive balance was on display again Sunday as seven Red Raider starters tallied hits with four recording multi-hit efforts. Six Red Raiders drove in runs, five of which had multi-RBI games.
Â
After hitting four home runs and compiling 11 RBI in Saturday's doubleheader, freshman Nate Rombach continued his hot hitting with his fifth home run of the season, his second double and four more RBI to bring his total to 15.
Â
Mason Montgomery received his first win of the season with 4.0 innings of work in the run-rule. He allowed just two runs on two hits, struck out five and walked none. Sophomore Hunter Dobbins tossed a scoreless fifth, junior Jakob Brustoski and senior John McMillon combined for a scoreless sixth and freshman Andrew Devine took care of the seventh.
Â
IMPACT INNINGS
1st - A single from Conley and walks to senior Brian Klein and Neuse loaded the bases for Jung. With two away, he drilled one to outfield that UNC's Hayden Heinze couldn't handle and all three runners motored home.
Â
3rd – Freshmen Dillon Carter and Cal Conley both drove in runs. Carter ripped a single into right that scored Neuse and made it 4-0. Later, with the bases loaded, Conley drew a hit-by-pitch that allowed Carter to touch home.
Â
4th – After HBU pulled within three at 5-2, Tech responded with five runs. Rombach hit an RBI double to left, then Carter flashed his speed by pushing a bunt past the pitcher and reaching first while Jung touched home. Sophomore Dru Baker followed with a two-run single and Conley added an RBI on a ground out that made it 10-2.
Â
5th – Rombach capped off his sensational weekend with his fourth three-run home run of the last two days. The shot put the Red Raiders up 14-2 and put the run-rule in play.
