No. 2 Tech Completes Midweek Sweep of Southern
February 26, 2020 | Baseball
Red Raiders have outscored their opponents 88-16 at home this season
Â
For the second day in a row, the Red Raiders (8-1) overwhelmed the Jaguars (2-5) early with two in the first and five in the second to carry a 7-1 lead into the third. Tech added two in the fourth and another in the fifth to pad its lead.
Â
This marks the third time in the last four years Tech has swept its first two-game midweek series of the season. The Red Raiders are now 6-0 at home and have outscored their opponents 88-16 at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
Sophomore Hunter Dobbins (1-0) struck out a career-high 10 batters over 5.0 innings in his first start of the season. It marked the most strike outs by a Red Raider this season as he spread out two runs on five hits with two walks.
Â
Veterans Dylan Neuse and Brian Klein paced the lineup on Wednesday with Neuse going 4-for-5 with three RBI and Klein adding a 2-for-3 effort with three runs. Freshman Nate Rombach also scored three times and drove in a run while posting a 1-for-3 performance.
Â
Southern held a brief 1-0 lead after the top-half of the first, but the Red Raiders responded quickly. With a man on first and two away, back-to-back doubles from Rombach and Neuse flipped the score in Tech's favor, 2-1, heading to the second.
Â
More two-out magic occurred in the second, starting with RBI singles from Klein and sophomore Cole Stilwell that made it 4-1. After an error on a throw from short brought in a run, Neuse made it 6-1 with his second RBI in the first two innings. Junior Braxton Fulford added one more with a bases-loaded walk, one of four walks in the game for Fulford which marks a career high.
Â
Fulford knocked in two more runs in the fifth with a one-out single to right center, and Neuse pushed the scoring to double figures in the fifth with a two-out RBI single to center.
